7 Kerry Tyrone matches to remember

The Kingdom and the Red Hands meet this afternoon and they have built up quite a rivalry over the last decade.

1. 2003 All-Ireland senior football semi-final

The game where the rivalry began.

Tyrone’s intensity and physicality proved too much for Kerry.

The Red Hands triumphed by 0-13 to 0-6 and a month later win their first ever All-Ireland senior title.

2. 2004 All-Ireland minor football final

Despite a terrific display from Darran O’Sullivan (pictured below) and quality point-taking by Paul O’Connor, the Kerry minors lose out to Tyrone in the All-Ireland final.

Tyrone win by 0-12 to 0-10 in Croke Park with Raymond Mulgrew and Ronan McRory kicking seven points between them.

Notable names on the Tyrone line-up that day were current seniors Colm Cavanagh and Cathal McCarron while Kerry’s setup contained O’Sullivan, Brendan Kealy, Killian Young and Anthony Maher.

3. 2005 All-Ireland senior football final

Kerry came to Croke Park in search of revenge but again fell short as Tyrone lifted the Sam Maguire with a 1-16 to 2-10 victory.

Dara O Cinneide found the net in the first-half for Kerry while Colm Cooper kicked five points and Tomas O Sé grabbed a second-half goal.

But Peter Canavan cooly despatched a goal for Tyrone while Stephen O’Neill, Owen Mulligan and Brian McGuigan notched 0-11 between them.

Tyrone celebrated their second All-Ireland title win in three years but it was an emotional occasion after the passing of Cormac McAnallen the year previous.

4. 2008 All-Ireland senior football final

Kerry’s quest to conquer Tyrone fails once more. Mickey Harte steers his team to a 1-15 to 0-14 victory with Tommy McGuigan grabbing the all-important goal early in the second-half.

Tyrone manage to quell Kerry’s attacking strengths with the McMahon brothers, Joe and Justin, curbing the threat of Kerry inside men Tommy Walsh and Kieran Donaghy.

But Tyrone are still extremely grateful to goalkeeper Pascal McConnell as his late intervention helps them win.

He stops a close-range shot from Declan O’Sullivan to protect his goalmouth and ensure Tyrone hold on for a four-point win.

5. 2009 National football league

Kerry travelled to Omagh and plundered the spoils with a 2-10 to 0-13 victory in a clash that was spiteful and controversial.

Two Colm Cooper goals helped Kerry into a 2-8 to 0-3 half-time lead but Tyrone dominated the second-half and cut the gap to three points at the final whistle.

The game ended with a melee close to the touchline and Kerry boss Jack O’Connor remonstrated with Tyrone’s Ryan McMenamin.

6. 2010 National football league

Tyrone triumphed by 1-11 to 1-10 in dramatic fashion in Omagh.

Kerry were clinging to a two-point lead in the finale when Colm Cavanagh managed to grab a priceless goal that salvaged victory for the Red Hands.

7. 2012 All-Ireland senior football qualifier

Finally the Kingdom are victorious over Tyrone in championship combat. They do it in style too with a 1-16 to 1-6 success in front of their home fans in Fitzgerald Stadium.

The round three qualifier tie in Killarney draws a huge crowd and generates an electric atmosphere. Tyrone get an early second-half boost when Conor Gormley finds the net but then Kerry pull clear in convincing fashion with Kieran Donaghy’s goal kickstarting their drive for the finish line.
