Kerr among suitors that could fill Nigel's boots

Former Ireland boss Brian Kerr has confirmed an interest in taking charge of Northern Ireland following the departure of Nigel Worthington.

BECOMING NORTHERN IRELAND’S next manager seems to be the hottest ticket in town at the moment with Brian Kerr, Jimmy Quinn and even Kevin Keegan being linked with the role.

The Irish Football Association (IFA) are searching for a new boss following the resignation of Nigel Worthington and several possible successors have already confirmed their interest.

“If they offer me the job tomorrow, I might well take it,” Kerr, whose family is from Belfast, told the BBC.

Having guided the Faroe Islands to a 2-0 win over Estonia and a 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland in recent qualifiers, the Dubliner’s star is once again on the rise following plenty of underage and a fair deal of senior success with the Republic of Ireland.

Kerr may well have endeared himself to officials in August too by stating that he didn’t like to see players switching allegiances, continuing: “I sympathise with the IFA because when you invest so much time, energy, money and coaching in players, to see them leave at 21 and 22 must be quite disheartening.”

Martin O’Neill has already ruled himself out of the running
, while Jim Magilton, Iain Dowie and even Shamrock Rovers manager Michael O’Neill have all been mentioned as possible candidates.

The Belfast Telegraph believes that a representative of former England and Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has been in touch with the IFA. Jimmy Quinn, currently in charge of Nantwich Town, said it would be “a dream come true” to be considered for the job.
