Treacy aiming to earn new deal after helping Burnley to Premier League promotion

The Dubliner was part of the Clarets squad which booked their place in the top flight under Sean Dyche this week.

DUBLINER KEITH TREACY just helped Burnley win automatic promotion back to the Premier League but the winger is hoping he will be around to enjoy their return to the top flight.

The Clarets have been playing Championship football since relegation in 2010 but a 2-0 win over fellow hopefuls Wigan Athletic on Monday night to take the second spot along with champions Leicester City.

25-year-old Ireland international has made 31 appearances this season for the club he joined from Preston in 2011 and says manager Sean Dyche has them focused on seeing out the historic campaign.

“It’s great to win promotion,” he told TheScore.ie. “We did celebrate but the manager had us back in training straight away. We owe it to the other clubs to go out and give a good account of ourselves in the last two games.

”It hadn’t really been talked about much and then around Christmas we found ourselves in a good position so just looked to keep the form going and here we are.”

They followed through on that promise by beating Ipswich 1-0 yesterday with Treacy having to settle for a substitute appearance and admits being frustrated at not starting more tames.

“We don’t have the biggest squad so I would like to have played from the start and had more 90 minutes under my belt but when you look at the quality of wingers we have at the club it’s hard to argue.”

That said, he enjoying playing under Dyche and is aiming to earn a new contract as his current deal is up in the summer.

Sean is quite an old school manager but also fairly modern in his ways which may sound contradictory. He’s also able to laugh at himself which I like.

“Now that we’ve won promotion everyone is talking about contracts but the manager needs to be given time to go to the board and make his case for players.  Hopefully I’ll still be here next season.”

The former Blackburn man has six senior Ireland cap and was in several squads under Giovanni Trapattoni but hasn’t featured in a green jersey since 2011.

And although he knows it will be difficult to catch the eye of Martin O’Neill, Treacy would love to return to the international set-up,

“I loved playing for my country and earning the six caps and obviously the hope is there to be involved with the squad again,” he says.

“People tend to forget and I sometimes do myself that I’m still only 25 and have a lot of playing left to do.”
