Campaign for Katie Taylor statue initiated

The campaigners are hoping that plans will be put in place for a monument paying tribute to the Bray native.

A FACEBOOK CAMPAIGN to have the current landmark in Bray’s town hall replaced by a statue of Katie Taylor has begun.

With a total of 621 likes and 50 shares currently, the idea has already acquired considerable backing.

A caricature of what such a statue might look like – depicting her reaction to winning gold at the Olympics - has been drawn by the graphic artrist Steve Mulreany (see below).

She hasn’t just won the Olympic gold, she’s also won World, European, and European Union gold medals. Numerous of them in fact. She’s by far one of the most successful sportsmen this country has produced; probably the most successful boxer anyway.

Does that mean a statue should be erected in her honour? Doesn’t bother me either way. Ireland has no other method of honouring people who deserve it and if the people of Bray want to do, sure why not let them?

Not to belittle her achievements but folk need to calm down, even revolutionaries and statesmen generally have to wait until they’ve passed on for this kind of treatment.

Too much, too soon. An admirable figure, but perhaps a national award would be more fitting?

Why would the statue show her on her knees?

The Katie Taylor band wagon, main stream media didn’t give two excrements about her before her victory, now everyone wants a piece of the Katie pie.

Isn’t there a danger that revellers late on a Saturday night might want to engage in fisticuffs with the aforementioned statue. I am not against the statue but perhaps if should be made of Rubber.

Steady on there. I think Katie did a great job but basing anything in a Facebook campaign is slightly unreliable. It’s too easy to ” like ” something without giving it proper consideration. Personally I think she should be given an award Luke the freedom of a town or city but a statue is taking it a bit too far.

Should get by planning no problem at all, considering our beautiful old town hall is now a McDonald’s and awhole block of old houses on the Main Street alongside this site were knocked down to build a monstrosity of a block of (empty) shops and apartments… never mind our architectural heritage and the fact that the Main Street had until that point been little changed for more than a century – money talks…

As for a statue – it could not be there because that is an historic monument – we should only have one if it can be of a decent standard – we do not do public art too well in this country – witness hideous tacky Molly Malone statue in Dublin… Rant over!
