KATIE TAYLOR FORCED her Swiss opponent into a standing count in the opening minutes of her first round European Boxing Championship bout and never looked back.

The Olympic champion had too much class for Sandra Brugger in their encounter in Bucharest, Romania. She easily won the opening rounds and kept Brugger at arm’s length thereafter and is now in the quarter finals.

Russia’s Sofya Ochigava was another comfortable winner and, as it stands, the pair are on course to meet in the gold medal bout. It would be a repeat of the London 2012 final, which Taylor won, much to Ochigava’s disgust.

Michaela Walsh got Ireland off to a perfect start by winning her opening bout.
