'It's not hard to find motivation' - Katie Taylor is already thinking about her next piece of history

Ireland’s champion says it’s “an absolute privilege” to equal Mary Kom’s five-in-a-row.

KATIE TAYLOR ISN’T done making history just yet.

Ireland’s superstar completed a brilliant five-in-a-row at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Jeju, South Korea on Monday.

With a unanimous decision victory over Azerbaijan’s Yana Allekseevna, Taylor equalled the record of five consecutive world titles set by India’s Mary Kom.

“It was such a tight, tight contest,”the champion told Darren O’Neill. “Every round was very, very close and very tricky.

“The tactics from my dad and Zaur [Antia, coach] were spot on again but I had to execute the gameplan so well today.

It was very tight but it’s an absolute privilege to equal that record of five world titles.

“I just thank God for another great victory. I know that everyone at home was praying for me as well and that was so encouraging and reassuring.”

Taylor’s father and coach Pete revealed afterwards that she had been carrying a slight injury on her left hand but it didn’t affect their tactics against the tricky southpaw.

The 28-year-old now plans to take a deserved break over Christmas before returning in the new year with Rio 2016 and the defence of her Olympic gold medal very much on her mind.

Taylor said: “It’s not hard to find motivation at all. Every contest is so tight and every championship is so hard to win and so hard to defend.

I know how hard it is to win one world title and to keep defending those titles is an absolutely huge challenge.

“I’m going to try to defend my Olympic title and make history again.”

Paul McGrath, Dara O’Briain and Enda Kenny lead the Twitter tributes to Katie Taylor
