Manchester United were fuming with the nature of Southampton’s first goal.

United were seething at the end of a first half that saw Lambert elbow Nemanja Vidic in going up for a header. Vidic hit the turf and play continued, with Lambert slotting past David de Gea after exchanging passes with Steven Davis.

Vidic needed treatment for a cut sustained in the elbowing incident and Lambert was quick to apologise to the Serbian, claiming the contact was accidental.
