Real deal: Mourinho talks up La Liga dominance

‘What I used to say is that every club in the world who goes to the Spanish league would finish third. Man City goes there, Manchester United goes there, Chelsea goes there. Who else?’

JOSE MOURINHO SAYS any team in the world would struggle to finish ahead of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Mourinho, 49, guided Real to the La Liga title in his second season at the club last term, but exited the UEFA Champions League at the hands of beaten finalists Bayern Munich. Barca meanwhile surrendered their Champions League crown in the last four to winners Chelsea, but Mourinho has no doubt about who the best two teams in the world are.

“What I used to say is that every club in the world (who) goes to the Spanish league would finish third,” Mourinho told ESPN. ”Man City goes there, Manchester United goes there, Chelsea goes there. Who else? They finish third because the two best teams in the world are in the same league, so of course to the others, it is a big difference.”

The rivalry between the two Liga giants is reflected in the battle between their star players, Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barca favourite Lionel Messi. Messi is in contention to win his fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or award, but Mourinho feels his Portuguese forward Ronaldo deserves to win what would his second World Player of the Year accolade.

“For me, the best player of a season must be one that won,” he said.  ”What (Ronaldo) did helped the team to win something big, and I do not think in the history of the Ballon D’Or, one players own it without winning a big thing. Without winning the Champions League, without winning the Spanish League, how can Messi be the Ballon d’Or?”

Despite Real’s reported interest in Tottenham star Luka Modric, the club are yet to sign any player in the transfer window, but Mourinho has claimed he is happy with the squad as it stands.

“The team is really full of talent, and we have lots of solutions and we can play in different ways, in different systems, in different philosophies,” he said. ”So what I have in my hands in terms of human capital, human resources is very, very hard.”

  • Easy to talk down Real Madrid and La Liga when you don’t watch it week in, week out. The top two in England last season didn’t even make it out of the group stages of the Champions League with United then going on to be completely dominated in both legs by Athletic Bilbao. Although I will congratulate Chelsea on winning the CL, they were extremely fortunate on several occasions and played negative football to do so.

La Liga is without a doubt the strongest league in Europe and while the Premier League is unmatched for drama and controversy, it’s quality has gone down in recent years. Real Madrid have found stability with Mourinho and I wouldn’t be surprised if this season ends with Mourinho guiding the club to Champions League and La Liga success. Will also be interesting to see what Tito Vilanova can bring to Barca in what is an impossible act to follow as the successor to Pep Guardiola.

Funnily enough, I think United’s current squad would be torn to shreds if they played in Spain while City’s pace and strength in midfield would be better suited. Glad to see Chelsea have added reinforcements to their ranks and I’ve missed the Premier League title being contested by more than two teams.

  • I miss mourinho purely because he was hilarious in gift grub and press conferences

  • They may have won their own domestic league but its been over 10 ten years since they’ve won the champions league so I dont think Mourinho has any business talking like that. Barcelona deserve to be talked about like that, but not Real Madrid, not yet anyway. I personally think the top four in the premier league would more than give them a run for their money

  • The premier league is more competitive. La Liga is a two horse race and not worth watching unless the big two are playing each other. United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal are all capable of beating each other and posing a challenge to the title while all of the the other teams can pull off upsets on any given day. I do think he’s right though, Barca and Madrid probably are the two best teams with the best individual players but this season will be more interesting. City will pose a bigger threat in Europe, Chelsea will buy big and United will be out to make up for last season.

    • Declan,

The English Premiership is also a two horse race. One horse is Man Utd and the other horse is someone else.

Maybe we’ll see United drop out of the top 2 this season with City and Chelsea looking so strong, and Spurs and Arsenal challenging, and maybe not. We’ve been saying “it might happen” for years.

In the last 20 years, United have finished outside the top 2 thrice. In the same period Barca have finished outside the top 2 six times to Real Madrid’s five, though it’s happening less frequently in recent years.

The reason the other teams in la Liga are never close to the big 2 is because they keep losing to Real and Barca, and keep beating each other. The latter should not be mistaken for weakness. We all saw how Bilbao ripped United apart in the Europa League and look where they finished in La Liga.
