Jonny's coming home! Sexton to re-join Leinster on IRFU contract

The 29-year-old out-half will re-join his home province on a contract that lasts until 2019.

THE IRFU HAS confirmed that Jonny Sexton will re-join Leinster next season on a central contract that will last until after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The 29-year-old out-half is in his second season with Racing Mรฉtro in the Top 14 and had an option to extend his time at the Parisian club, but the lure of a return to his home province has proved too difficult to resist.

This announcement is a major boost for Leinster, who will bring back a world-class player for 2015/16 and beyond, as well as Ireland coach Joe Schmidt. The Kiwi was frustrated by Racingโ€™s management of the player at times last season, but will be relieved that Sexton has agreed a deal which expires in November, 2019.

โ€œI am pleased to be re-joining Leinster, the club where I started my professional career,โ€ said Sexton. โ€œI grew up playing my rugby in Leinster and always wanting to pull on the blue jersey so I am delighted to be able to return to play my club rugby in Ireland.โ€

I have made a choice for my family and for my international career. We miss our family in Ireland. I have a great relationship with everyone here [in Paris], it was a very hard decision to make. I didnโ€™t speak to any French club other than Racing.โ€

Meanwhile, IRFU CEO Philip Browne stated his pleasure at having secured the out-halfโ€™s services:

โ€œJonathan is one the best out-halves in world rugby and the IRFU are delighted that he will be playing his rugby in Ireland. Irish rugby will benefit hugely from having a player of his calibre playing full-time in Ireland.โ€
