Jonjo Shelvey to train with England seniors

Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs has also withdrawn from the England squad due to injury, with Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand called up as his replacement.

LIVERPOOL MIDFIELDER Jonjo Shelvey is set to train with the England squad this week following a knee injury to Chelsea’s Frank Lampard.

Shelvey, 20, is a regular for England’s Under-21 side, but he has been banned for their European U-21 Championship play-off first-leg clash against Serbia on Friday.

England manager Roy Hodgson has decided Shelvey will train with the senior side in the absence of veteran Lampard, and will return to the youth set-up before their second-leg clash in Serbia.

Former Charlton player Shelvey has been a regular in Brendan Rodgers’ new-look Liverpool side this season, and has already contributed three goals in all competitions for the Reds.

He will be hoping to continue his form in the coming weeks at Anfield, and should return to action in the English Premier League fixture at home to Reading on 20 October at the completion of a three-match ban for being red carded against Manchester United.

In addition to Lampard, Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs has also withdrawn from the England squad due to injury, with Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand called up as his replacement. England play San Marino at Wembley Stadium on Friday, before travelling to meet Poland on Tuesday.

Poland will be without captain Jakub Blaszczykowski after the Borussia Dortmund midfielder suffered an ankle injury against Hannover.
