Jol confirmed to take charge of Fulham

Former Spurs boss agrees initial two-year deal at Craven Cottage.

EX-TOTTENHAM BOSS Martin Jol has been appointed as manager of Fulham following Mark Hughes’ resignation last week.

Jol has been chosen ahead of other rumoured Fulham targets including Steve McClaren and Martin O’Neill.

The Dutchman described Fulham as a club with “good solid foundations” and added that he was excited about the challenge ahead, saying: ”I am looking forward to being part of the Fulham family and thank the chairman for the trust shown in me.”

Jol had been strongly linked with the Fulham post last season, but he reportedly turned it down in favour of continuing his role as Ajax manager.

However, Jol subsequently resigned as a Ajax manager last December after a disappointing run of results that left them fourth in the Dutch league and unable to qualify past the group stages of the Champions League.

The ex-West Brom and Coventry player has previously enjoyed success at Tottenham and Hamburg. He was the first Spurs manager to guide the side to successive European qualifications in the league since Keith Burkinshaw, before being controversially sacked after a poor start to the 2007/2008 season. He then went on to guide Hamburg to the semi-finals of both the German Cup and UEFA Cup before taking over as Ajax coach.

Jol has signed a two-year contract with Fulham with an option to extend it a third year.
