John Mullane to take 'break' from intercounty hurling - reports

Talismanic forward cites ‘family reasons’ for decision, hours after sport loses Lar Corbett to retirement also.

Updated 20.14pm

JOHN MULLANE HAS stepped back from the Waterford senior hurling set-up, according to media reports today – but county chiefs say they know nothing of the apparent development.

The four-time All Star is to take ‘an indefinite break’ from the Déise set-up, according John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner first reported the story today.

Tomorrow’s Examiner however suggests that the player will be back within a month and a half, according to reports on Off The Ball.

The Waterford County Board office were unable to confirm the news this morning while one county officer insists they know nothing about the development.

Another official said that there was an executive meeting last night and there was no indication that Mullane would make this announcement,

TV3′s Kieran McSweeney says he spoke to the forward earlier and he’s cited ‘family commitments’ as key to his decision.

The story comes, of course, just hours after the news broke of Lar Corbett’s decision to retire from intercounty hurling also.

The Thurles man told Tipperary manager Declan Ryan and his Premier County team-mates last night that he would not be available for selection.  The former Hurler of the Year says his shock exit – at 30 years of age – is due to business and work reasons.
