John Joe Nevin storms into quarter-finals

The bantamweight fighter produced an assured performance to win 15-10 against his Kazakhstan opponent today.

JOHN JOE NEVIN delivered a confident performance to see off Kazakhstan’s Kanat Abutalipov this afternoon.

The Mullingar boxer, who is competing in the 56kg bantamweight event, controlled the three rounds against his 29-year-old opponent to win out by an eventual score of 15-10.

After a cagey start by both fighters, Nevin was 5-2 up after the opening bell and extended that lead to 10-5 in the second round.

Next up for the two-time world amateur championships gold medallist is Mexico’s Oscar Valdez Fierro, who overcame Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan in his round of 16 bout.

That fight is scheduled for this Sunday, August 5, at 8.45pm.

    A. I would never go to Mullingar.
    B. It was a simple question? Do you think he’d have a problem with it? Did I not use the correct respectful term?
    C. Are you a member of the traveling community Paddy?

well done on win, but very un-olympian conduct in entering the ring. wiping your feet like a dog after they take a dump was very disrespectful for opponent and would have expected a hell of a lot more from an athlete, even more so from someone from a background that puts up with so much negative stigma back here. for his disrespect to his opponent and nothing else, I shall not be supporting him from now on. shame.

What are you on about. Ever been in a ring? Almost every fighter does it. Its for the purpose of both cleaning your boots before you get in the ring and also they may be new boots and the soles needed scuffing.

@ les rock, by your comment I presume you haven’t see it. whatever about scuffing your boots as part of your prep, that’s fine, but to run to your opponents corner and do it 6 inches in front of them with your back to them is, frankly, a load a b***ox, there’s 3 other corners for god sake.

In his interview after it he was full of praise for his opponent and that he didnt want to meet him so early because he deserved to go further etc etc, he doesn’t need to do that he just thought it sportsmanship to speak about how much respect he had for him and he liked him.

If its gentlemanly conduct your looking for before a bout , (where two guys are about to fight each other) Maybe you should stick with the Cricket..
