John Joe Nevin makes his pro debut on a Paddy's Day card in America tonight

The Mullingar featherweight faces Alberto Candelaria in Boston.

OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALLIST John Joe Nevin will hope not to need the luck of the Irish when he makes his professional debut tonight.

Nevin will face unbeaten Puerto Rican featherweight Alberto Candelaria (3-0-1, 2KOs) over six rounds on a St Patrick’s Day card at the House of Blues in Boston.

Dublin’s Jamie Kavanagh, a world youth silver medallist for Ireland as an amateur, also faces a Puerto Rican opponent in Andreas Navarro.

But all eyes will be on Nevin as the 24-year-old takes his first steps in the pro game.

“I have no predictions, I’ll just go in and enjoy myself,” the Mullingar native said this week. “I’ll do what I always do and see how it turns out.

“I’m eager to get started as the last time I fought was in August.

“All my focus is on Monday night and getting my professional career off to a winning start.”
