FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION OF Ireland chief executive John Delaney says the search for Giovanni Trapattoni’s successor will take in managers from throughout the world.
Trap left his position with Ireland yesterday morning in the wake of defeats to Austria and Sweden over the past week.
Derry-born Martin O’Neill is the bookies’ favourite to replace the Italian but Delaney insists another foreign boss could be installed.
“We all want the best man, it doesn’t matter if he’s Irish, English, continental or whatever, once we can get the best man in to get the best out of our players and qualify for 2016,” he told Sky Sports News today.
“That’s what the Irish people want, that’s what the Irish soccer supporters want, and the association. I wouldn’t rule anything in or out at this stage. I’ve been around this process a number of times and you know this morning there’s agents ringing putting names in, that’s what happens.
“And it’s important that we handle the process as confidentially as we can.”
He continued: “I wouldn’t read anything into being a favourite or not being favourite because at the moment the Association hasn’t sat down as a board to sit down and look at the job description.
“There’s many names obviously like Chris Hughton, Martin O’Neill, Mick McCarthy, Roy Keane, Brian McDermott — all those names will be mentioned as well as many others. The FAI Board will sit down over the next week or so and we will put together the type of job description we want as part of the process.
“Ideally it would be nice to have a manager in place by October but that’s not a must because we have 12 months before we play our first competitive European qualifiers next September and I think it’s important we get the right man in so that we qualify for France in 2016.”
Delaney and his cronies the biggest cancer in irish football. Complete overhaul required. This is the real issue here.
You could look foreign yourself John and stay there, he’s a blight to Irish soccer
Somebody should let the FAI know that we play Germany in Cologne on 11 October, it might be a good idea to have a new man in the job well in advance of that match.
I’m no expert but having the new man in place at the earliest opportunity, giving him two competitive matches against full strength teams and a half dozen friendlies with a tour/training camp in May before Euro qualifying starts this time next year would be a wise course of action.
Just boycott any Irish game from now on! Untill the FAI come up with concrete proposals on how to fix our domestic league! Current LOI has a image it cant seem to shake, fresh new blueprints are needed. New franchise/teams everything!
It’s image isn’t the problem! The quality of football is the issue!! Holding on to young players is the issue!! No money is the issue!! Image is the product of all of the above but certainly not the problem!!
Delaney backtracking after his interview in Leeds yesterday. He’s an idiot
Can we look to a foreign Chief Executive as well?
Does it matter who we appoint as long as Delaney is in charge. How anyone could work underneath that muppet is beyond me !!! The FAI is corrupt and inward looking cult !!!
I would safely say that a lot of the fall-outs between players and manager was down to bad organization by Delaney and the FAI. There were always going to be communication issues and I dont think the FAI ever sorted these issues out. The FAI lack the professionalism and organization to accommodate a non-english speaking manger so I would suggest they dont try hiring one again.
I hope they do hire a foreign manager. Martin O’Neill was born in Derry.
It’s LONDONDERRY!!!
Guus hiddink would be interesting, though anything after his wages at anzhi mackhalakakakaka will be a big step down for him.
Oh my god here we go again :-(
How is Delaney being allowed to decide on Ireland’s new manager.he bought us Staunton (shite) he bought us Kerr (shite) and Trap (shite) so why change the habit of a lifetime.
I think a suitable candidate would be Leo Beenhakker…vastly experienced and could be tempted out his current position in Trinidad.
Ah Christ!
