IT IS A rare occasion when RTÉ pundits Joe Brolly and Pat Spillane find common ground on a subject. However, the duo were in agreement that Mayo were awarded a soft penalty in the All-Ireland semi final victory over Tyrone.
Alan Freeman slammed home a second-half penalty for Mayo after Colm Boyle was fouled near the 13-metre line. The goal put James Horan’s men ahead for the first time in the contest and they ended up winning by six points despite some lacklustre shooting.
Referee Maurice Deegan had ruled out a Freeman goal when he controversially opted to award a free against Tyrone’s Conor Gormley rather than allow play to develop.
Speaking after the 1-16 to 0-13 Mayo victory, Brolly declared, “After [Deegan] screwed up the goal so badly, Mayo were entitled to get a break… It doesn’t look like a penalty in the first place.”
Spillane commented, “If it was a foul it was clearly outside the 13-metre line… Maurice Deegan was in no place to judge because he was 25 yards behind the [incident].”

Brolly added, “What [Deegan] was trying to do was make up for the balls-up he made in the first half.”
What do you think? Should Mayo have been awarded a penalty?
Deegan had to make the decision in a split second those clowns in the studio are able to watch it over and over again in super slow motion brollys an absolute clown
In fairness they are right! The ref would have had a chance at half time to look at the disallowed goal plus the complaints by the mayo management team, so obviously the decision he made to rule out a perfectly legit goal would be weighing on his mind. . . Refs are human after all
Maurice Deegan is the worst ref in the country. Mayo better team but penalty decision was massive, an arrogant man.
Yes, it was a penalty and even if it wasn’t it’s no more than Tyrone deserve after their disgusting cynical tactics we’ve been subjected to all season.
Are you trying to say there’ll be no more cynical fouling between now and the end of September? Tyrone was not the only team to foul/cynical foul during the championship !
Every football game is full of cynical fouling, I dunno why Tyrone are been targeted.
Surely you are contradicting yourself , as well as talking nonsense ,
You cannot seriously think that because Tyrone fouled or didn’t
foul in previous games previously , that decides for a penalty later
on in the season
No body suggested that.
Because Sean cavanagh has been so blatant!!
He is a great footballer. Did u see him make many cynical fouls today? Looks a long way back for Tyrone, they were well beat in all areas today. Mayo showed a lot of guts after a terrible start.
Totally agree, cynical tackling is part of the game now. How many frees do Mayo/Donegal/Tyrone/Kildare etc concede in their own half forward line when defenders are coming out with the ball?? Tyrone were scapegoated by pantomime ‘analysts’.
If you looked the stats Tyrone had fouled a great deal more than anyone else, you make up your own mind after that!
It was Mayo last year. Who will it be next year I wonder?
Them 2 langers wreck my head trying too hard to be like dunphy and Giles even 2 bigger langers
Joe brollys hair is a disgrace !
Brolly is bang on. .
Brolly only does what’s good for his career on tv. Because of his outburst mayo got a pen and 3/4 soft frees at a critical time.
The mayo goal would probably not have been scored as at least 1 of the Tyrone pulled out of a tackle when he heard the whistle.
What do you expect from an idiot like Deegan.
It was Mayo’s day though, Tyrone were outclassed in second half :(
