Westwood leads the Open as Tiger and Hunter stalk close behind

Lowry, Harrington and McDowell struggle but Clarke remains in touch.

LEE WESTWOOD IS leading the British Open on -3 after overnight leader Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a six over par 77 to slip back to +3 for the tournament.

Tiger Woods shares second place on -1 with Hunter Mahan who shot the round of the day (-3) to take his place in the final group on Sunday.

Woods will go out in the penultimate pairing with Australian Adam Scott (level par) who has, of course, Woods’ former caddy Steve Williams on his bag.

The world number one has never won a Major when not leading or sharing the lead after 54 holes.

Earlier in the day it looked as if any one of twenty players could challenge for the title but as Saturday has rumbled on more and more challengers, including the likes of Phil Mickelson (+2) and Dustin Johnson (+3), have fallen by the wayside.

The third round was not without controversy either after Hideki Matsuyama (+3) was hit with a one-stroke penalty on the 17th hole for slow play. The decision seemed harsh on the Japanese golfer as a number of groups were put on the clock but, as of now, the 21-year-old was the only player punished.

Despite a steady start from Darren Clarke he just couldn’t buy a birdie and, at +6, has fallen well out of contention, as have Graeme McDowell (+6), Shane Lowry (+10) and Padraig Harrington (+12).
