JIM STYNES HAS died at the age of 45 after a long battle with cancer, it has been announced.
The AFL legend had been fighting the disease since the diagnosis was made two and a half years ago, and is understood to have passed away in a ‘pain free, dignified and peaceful’ manner.
Stynes’ wife, Sam, posted a message on the Jimbo Super Muesli Facebook page, thanking fans for their messages of support. It read:
“In his final days Jim was immersed with insurmountable love and tenderness surrounded by his family and some close friends in the comfort of his own home.“On behalf of Jim my heartfelt thanks to all those who have so generously cared for, guided and supported Jim throughout his challenging cancer battle.”
The Irishman gained legendary status in Aussie Rules circles, after becoming the first non-Australian player to claim the Brownlow Medal, having previously made the switch from GAA as part of the ‘Irish Experiment’.

Very sad news.
just siting in front of this screen ,dont know what 2 say ,,he was my hero ,,we love u jim ,,rest there jim ,,thanks for just being jim xxx
Very sad news, i had always admired his courage and strength. I had attended an AFL game last year involving Melbourne, whom he was chairman of, and he sang a song on the pitch at half time only 10 days after getting a tumour in his brain removed. May he rest in peace.
Rest in peace. I watched the documentary a while back and he was so determined and allowed the cameras such access to the alternative way he tried to fight the cancer.
Legend. His documentary that was on tv recently was truly inspiring. R.I.P.
I have admired Jim for years, from when I lived in Aus as an inspirational footballer to his later years and his heroic fight with cancer. He was a genuinely, extraordinary, good man. One of the best.
I wish i had known him personally
May he rest in peace

Great guy, in the early 90′s I played a bit with Ballyboden, he was at one of our house parties and walked home with my cask of home brew , great craic and an amazing athlete, so very sad to see another person die so young from this horrible disease… RIP big man… We are so proud of you..:-((
People who use thumbs down on articles like this shouldn’t be let near the Internet. Attention seeking fools
Rip Jim,
Very small few red thumbs. I’d say without a doubt it’s the same few sick wankers who always red thumb these kind of well meaning comments
I was in De La Salle with Jim and will always remember his towering smiling figure in the hallways….. Gent
What bravery and dignity he showed in his last months, when facing the inevitable. An example to us all.
Dreadful news – always hoped the outcome would be different, though that was unlikely sadly. After watching the documentary about Nuala O Faolain, this is so sad and tragic.
A true gentleman and legend. His documentary was incredible to watch. RIP
