What advice did Dubs boss Jim Gavin have for Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley?

DUBLIN BOSS JIM Gavin has revealed some information about the conversation that took place when Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley contacted him.

McGinley outlined in a recent interview with The Sunday Independent about how he had spoken to Gavin after Dublin’s All-Ireland semi-final loss to Donegal last month.

The man who will lead Europe into action in Gleneagles for this weekend’s battle with USA, sought out Gavin as he tried to gain an insight into the mind of a manager whose team had been defeated.

Gavin stressed yesterday that it was ‘a private conversation’ but did speak about what the general subject matter was.

“The essence of it was dealing with the perception of being favourites going into a game or a competition. That’s just an external thing that we couldn’t control and the most important thing was control the internal thing of trying to get a performance.

“The most important thing was what the players thought and what the management thought and the relationship between them. That’s the nature of sport. People have opinions, journalist have opinions and that’s what they are.

“That’s why people are passionate about sport, because people have plenty of opinions about the game. Who’s going to win, who’s favourites?

“I’d be friendly with him (McGinley). Obviously he’s a good Dublin supporter and with his dad he’s a good Donegal supporter. He’s a GAA man first and foremost. I wished him all the best.”

Was Gavin helpful to McGinley?

“Maybe Sunday will tell,” smiled the Dublin manager.

Noooo!. Why must Federer age. The rest of them are grunting plebs by comparison whose forehands look like they’re shovelling cement.

Hopefully his two sons take up tennis and dominate for an age.

He looks like a right eejit in that blazer.
Murray all they way for me, otherwise Rafa.
Roger had his twin daughters playing on the practice courts at the weekend. Looks like they are more likely to take over from him, and I know how much you love women’s tennis Fred!

Your reverse snobbery is on show Joan.

His sons are younger, i shall wait for them to take over his mantle.

Nothing to do with snobbery in either direction.
He just looks like an eejit in the blazer…

As a lover of all sports , probably the greatest sportsman I’ve seen , longevity, style , panache , brilliance , a lot of compliments are worthy for Federer, dignity probably the most apt !

Time to hang it up??? He just lost a grand slam semi final in 5 sets. It’s not like he was beaten in the first round

Only a matter of time before Raonic wins a major. His game has come on massively the last year or so and he’s improving the mental side too.

Jason, the way I see it is this. He’s only won 2 slams this decade. One of which was the first one. That’s a lot of losses. Simply put, he’s never going to win another one, so why continue to lose? Djokovic slipped up and he still couldn’t take advantage. Continuing past this year, will eventually result in much earlier losses thus diminishing his lofty reputation. I’ll be surprised if next year isn’t his last on tour.
