SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE have confirmed they’re investigating reports of abusive messages after athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill was targeted by a rape tweet.
Following her public criticism of footballer and convicted rapist Ched Evans (who has been offered the chance to train with his former team Sheffield United since his release from prison last month), the Olympic champion received plenty of online support but also some extreme abuse.

One tweet was sent from an account, since deleted, which read:
“I hope he (Evans) rapes her”
South Yorkshire Police have issued a statement to say an investigation has been opened.
South Yorkshire Police can confirm they are investigating reports of abusive tweets.Officers are making efforts to contact the individual concerned, but have launched an investigation into the posts online.”
Yesterday, Ennis-Hill, who’s from Sheffield, said that she wants her name removed from Sheffield United’s stadium should Evans be offered a contract with the club.

In a statement, she said:
I believe being a role model to young people is a huge honour and those in positions of influence in communities should respect the role they play in young people’s lives and set a good example. If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs.”
Don’t really understand the support & sympathy Evans appears to be enjoying from many quarters. If I rape someone do I have to be good at football to only serve half my sentence and attract outpourings of sympathy & support upon my release?
Because if you research the case some people believe he didn’t do it. Him and his friend had sex with the woman but only one was put in prison for rape. Research the case. And you’ll see why so,em people think he is innocent.
Yes I know that. I thought he was guilty until I read up on the case and now I’m unsure as to how only he was guilty of rape and looking at the other parts of the case has made me wonder whether he actually is guilty or not.
I can’t really go into detail why I think this because I tried yesterday and my comments where removed so all I can say is to research the case if you haven’t already and decide for yourself.
On one side, there are genuine misogynists who will defend Evans no matter what, then on the other side, there are radical feminists that will use this to spread their misandry. It’s one of those issues where normal sane people should stay away from. Let the deluded ideologues fight amongst themselves.
That’s just a stupid comment. Some people have researched the case and have different opinions on it. That doesn’t make me a misogynist and if you think he’s guilty that doesn’t mean you’re a feminist. So if you’re “normal” then what do you think he is?
Being found guilty by a jury of your peers doesn’t render a verdict unquestionable, nor does it deny that miscarriages of justice can, and have, happened.
Dylan Moran you’d swear you were the only person who has read up on the case!
He was found guilty by a jury of his peers.
He appealed on 4! (Yes 4) different grounds – each one was dismissed individually.
He then appealed to have his sentence reduced. Thrown out of court also.
I’m not sure how much guilty you can get ?!
I’m just saying what my opinion was after I read the case. I commented already that other people researched the case and have a different opinion than me.
Caeliv if he is guilty how is his friend not guilty considering they both and intercourse with her? The case is strange and I’ve formed an opinion from reading about it. If you’ve done the same and have a different opinion than me then fair enough.
I’m not going to comment on aspects of the case but you have to respect the decision of the jury, allied to the lengthy appeals process which failed and allied to the efforts made to reduce the sentence which also failed. When looked at in tandem the only logical conclusion I can come to is that justice was served to the man.
Peoples comments show very little regard to the poor woman who was the victim in all this.
People are much quicker to moan about Evans being some type of victim of a miscarriage of justice, rather then remember who the real victim is here. If Evans felt a morsel of regret towards her you might feel differently about him.
I’m no expert on this case Dylan but it is possible for a woman to consent to sex with one man and not the other. There was a case in Australia I think where a woman went back to a rugby player’s hotel room and after they had sex he invited a bunch if his team mates into the room to join in. That’s not what she signed on for.
People are quick to say Mike Tyson isn’t a rapist and people are quick to say Ched is. They were both convicted. What’s the difference between the two?
Dylan, his friend is not guilty because what he had was consensual sex. Evans took his non consensual “turn” afterwards with the victim. A woman having sex with one man does not confer permission on another to do the same.
His friend and Ched said it was consensual sex with Ched. She was deemed “too drunk to consent” that doesn’t mean she didn’t give her consent it means she wasn’t in a fit state to give her consent.
massive child abuse story, involving senior British politicians, happening in the UK – that is being completely ignored by the Irish media.
It was reported today on British news, that the ongoing inquiry of a paedophile ring of elite politicians – may now involve murder investigations. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-30052726
So pathetic how this is becoming a pattern. Just like gamergate, any woman who expresses an opinion on gender inequality, misogyny or sexual assault gets threats of rape, doxxing or violence. I’m sure the majority are hot heads with sock puppet accounts, but how is a woman supposed to know who’s serious and who’s not?
I know many a guy who has slept with a random girl and he was so drunk he could not remember it and be default they could not have given consent but what would the reaction be if he went to the garda station the next day claiming rape. He would be laughed out the door. Double standards
If your friends feel that they have been taken advantage of and sexually assaulted, then yes, they should make a formal complaint against the women that assaulted them.
Daisy they don’t just feel they have been taken advantage they know they have been. But they would be laughed out of the garda station. One guy I know was hammered one night and this girl who he knew was was driving brought him back to her place and feed him more vodka which was his last memory before waking up in bed naked with her the next morning. The girl is a predator but could do the same thing a thousand times without any legal repercussions
The Criminal Cases Review Commission will be reviewing the case in the coming months where they could potentially quash his conviction. If they do this he will no longer be a rapist in the eyes of the law. Will all his detractors come out and publicly apologise to him in the same way they have publicly vilified him? Doubtful. Life isn’t always black and white.

Serial Podcast series 2 could investigate the Ched Evans case.

Conor you’re not allowed have an opinion other than Ched is guilty because apparently anything else means you’re a misogynist.

Dylan. Will you cop on. If she consents to sex with one person that doesn’t mean anyone can jump in.
They both said she consented to Ched. She was deemed to drunk to consent.
This is disgusting. What goes through someone’s head to do stuff like this on social media? It’s just so f#cking moronic.

It’s actually about ethics in football journalism?

I agree Eamon. This whole case is nonsense they were all drunk on the night.
If your friends feel that they have been taken advantage of and sexually assaulted, then yes, they should make a formal complaint against the women that assaulted them.
But nothing would happen to the woman. That’s the point.

Where I would feel tense anger is if I was in Evans position and I genuinely did not commit a crime and was found guilty!
