JBM on the brink as Cork chiefs recommend appointment

Leeside legend Jimmy Barry Murphy will be ratified as the Rebels’ next hurling manager.

CORK’S HURLING APPOINTMENT committee has today officially recommended that Jimmy Barry Murphy be re-installed as the Rebels’ senior manager.

The appointment is subject to ratification by the county committee at its next meeting on 6 September.

The Barr’s man will have a three-year term and has the right to his own selectors – an issue which has caused friction on Leeside in the past.

“The management committee (of the county committee) has authorised this announcement now to enable the recommended manager to commence the process of appointing his management team,” an official statement reads, “and to provide the earliest opportunities for management appointments to be considered for the other Cork intercounty hurling teams in the various grades.”

Barry previously led the county to All-Ireland glory in 1999 after a glittering dual playing career.

Denis Walsh was told this week that he would not be re-appointed after two-and-a-half years at the helm.
