JOSE MOURINHO WAS in danger of losing his first league game as Chelsea manager at Stamford Bridge as Southampton led 1-0.
The Saints hit the front after only 13 seconds when Michael Essien lobbed an ill-advised backpass into the Chelsea box. Jay Rodriguez latched onto the ball and slotted past Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

The Blues bounced back, however, with goals from Gary Cahill, John Terry and Demba Ba giving them a 3-1 win.
Cahill turned in Chelsea’s equaliser after Branislav Ivanovic went close from a corner. Terry, his central defensive partner, put the home side ahead after nodding in a whipped cross from Juan Mata.
Ba struck in the last minute to register his first league goal of the season. The win sees Chelsea climb to second and lie four points off Arsenal at the summit. Mourinho told the BBC: “In this crazy league this result is important as once again title contenders have dropped points.”
