JASON QUIGLEY MAY have lost his World Championship final but he still became the first Irish male boxer to win a silver medal at the event.
The 22-year old year middleweight lost 30-27 on two cards and 29-28 on the other to local fighter Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, his first defeat in 33 fights.
The Finn Valley fighter took a standing count in the first round after being knocked down by his Kazakh opponent and all three judges awarded the round 10-9 to the home town fighter.
There was better from Quigley in the second round but Alimkhanuly was still the busier fighter and once again took it 10-9 on all the cards meaning the Irish fighter needed a knock out going into the last.
However, it wasn’t to come and, despite his best efforts Quigley, can have no complaints about the result.
Speaking to Kenneth Egan after the fight, the Donegal boxer was in reflective mood.
“I just couldn’t get to him. He’s very tricky. He’s an exceptional boxer and his movement and distance was perfect. I just couldn’t get anything on him at all.
“He didn’t want to trade at all but they were his tactics and it was perfect.”
Great achievement and also good that there was no dodgy judging verdict.
Good man.
Brilliant boxer, well done Jason.
Tough fight again the hometown boy and silver some achievement. I will watching his career with interest . He has a lot of success ahead of him.
Hope he goes pro and becomes world champion some day.
Rather see him take gold at the Olympics.

Was a great fight this morning. Kazahk deserved it. Seemed that bit quicker and had a little bit more left in the tank at the end. All in all a great performance. Quigley will be back!
