Jason Quigley even more likely to turn pro after surrendering his national title

Donegal star will not compete in the National Elite Championships which begin on Friday.

IRISH BOXING STAR Jason Quigley will not defend his national middleweight title, fuelling further speculation about a professional move.

The Donegal fighter surrendered his senior belt when he failed to register before yesterday’s deadline for the National Elite Championships.

Quigley, the current world number two, has been courted by a number of promoters following an explosive year in 2013 and has made no secret of his pro ambitions.

His camp were unavailable for comment when contacted by TheScore.ie last night.

Quigley’s is one of six belts which will be vacant when boxing begins on Friday evening, 21 February.

Olympic bronze medallist Michael Conlan has stepped up from flyweight to bantamweight while Declan Geraghty has also moved up a division from bantamweight to lightweight.

Ross Hickey, the defending light-welterweight champion, is ruled out with an arm injury while Tommy McCarthy and Sean Turner vacated their respective heavyweight and super-heavyweight titles when they turned pro last year.

In the women’s divisions, all eyes will be on Belfast’s Alanna Murphy who will face the reigning European, World and Olympic champion Katie Taylor in the 60kg final.
