Quigley guarantees Ireland second bronze in Russia

The Donegal middleweight was victorious in his quarter-final bout at the European U23 Championships this morning.

IRELAND SECURED A second medal at the European U23 Boxing Championships today thanks to Jason Quigley.

The Donegal native, competing in the middleweight class, saw off Victor Carapchevschii oif Moldova with  12-9 win in Russia, meaning he is now guaranteed at least a bronze.

The 21-year-old joins Irish team-mate Hugh Myres in Monday’s semi-finals after the light-flyweight progressed past French southpaw Ory Georges yesterday.

Things didn’t go as well for Declan Geragthy, who was beaten 17-7 by Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin in the bantamweight quarter-final.

“Jason boxed very well and he won all three rounds against a tough opponent today and we’re delighted to have another boxer through to the semi-finals,” Irish team manager John Finn told IABA.ie.

“Declan did well for the first two rounds, but the Russian came back very strong in the third.”

Ireland have one more fighter competing today – Mark O’Hara begins his quarter-final around 3pm Irish time.
