Carragher: 'I was never offered any coaching role by Liverpool'

Former club captain also says he was ‘embarrassed’ at having to train when he wasn’t first-choice.

FORMER LIVERPOOL CAPTAIN Jamie Carragher has revealed that the club made no attempt to retain his services in a coaching capacity once he retired from playing last season.

Speaking to The Anfield Wrap podcast, the 36 year-old, who currently has a multitude of media commitments, admitted it’s now unlikely he will make the move into management.

I was never offered a role by someone else or at Liverpool. I don’t think I’ll ever move home, if I’m honest, so the chances of being a manager or a coach dwindle a bit there as I would’t be moving my family around this country, let alone Europe or whatever. Who knows in the future but I’m enjoying what I’m doing.”

Carragher also claimed he was ‘embarrassed’ having to train every day despite his lack of involvement with the first team and that his regular role as a substitute contributed to his decision to step away from football.

I told Brendan Rodgers 12 months before the end of that season that I was finishing. I knew I was finishing. I’d had enough of being a substitute. I said to Brendan ‘I understand Agger and Skrtel are your first choice, I want to help you as much as possible as a manager. I wanna play, if I play well obviously I’d love to play, of course’ and I got back into the team which was a brilliant ending for me. But he knew then that I was actually close to jacking it in halfway through the season just because I wasn’t involved. I was embarrassed training every day.”

After 737 appearances for the club, the second-highest in Liverpool history, Carragher’s final game was the top-flight win over QPR in mid-May. In his time at Anfield, he won one Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Cup and two Super Cups.
