JAMES SKEHILL WAS only a few months old when the heroes of 1988 brought the Liam McCarthy Cup back to Galway for the second part of a famous All-Ireland double.

Now the Tribesmen’s keeper has a chance to add his name to the honour roll when he lines out against Kilkenny in Sunday’s final.

Galway have already made history once this season in handing down a 10-point drubbing to the Cats to win the county’s first-ever Leinster title.

That win is a distant memory now, Skehill explains. Winning an All-Ireland medal would be the greatest achievement of all.

“As a hurler you’ve reached the pinnacle of your career in getting to an All-Ireland final,” the Cappaghtaggle man told TV3′s GAA Show. “You’re only 70 minutes away from putting your name on a list that’s quite small.

It’s a massive task. I can’t heighten the fact that we’re playing possibly the greatest team of all time.

But personally, it’s just a great occasion. It’s great to be there and hopefully we can drive on and win it.
