Ireland’s top tennis player is one win away from the US Open main draw

James McGee faces Ze Zhang in New York later today.

JAMES MCGEE IS on the brink of his first Grand Slam appearance after a terrific comeback at the US Open last night.

Ireland’s number one battled from a set down to beat the seeded Yuki Bhambri of India 5-7 6-2 7-5 and progress to the third qualifying round.

McGee, 27, trailed 3-5 in the deciding set but dug deep to win the last four games and set up a make-or-break showdown against Ze Zhang of China later today.

A win would book his place in the main draw which begins in Flushing Meadows on Monday and net the world number 195 a minimum prize of almost $36,000.
