Trapattoni warns McClean over foul-mouthed Twitter rant

“With the young we need to have patience,” Trapattoni admits, ahead of the London friendly against Oman tomorrow.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS warned James McClean that he is lucky to still be playing for the Republic of Ireland following his foul-mouthed Twitter rant.

McClean, 23, vented his fury at not coming off the bench during the Republic’s 2-1 win over Kazakhstan on Friday night, describing his experience in Astana on Twitter as a “f****n* joke”.

The Ireland boss only decided to retain the Sunderland player for tomorrow’s friendly against Oman after he apologised, and the Italian admits had McClean been playing for a bigger country, he would have been axed.

“Another manager, English or German, would have said take your bag and go home, but I might need him in the game to score a goal,” Trapattoni said. ”He was mortified (when he was pulled up in front of the squad). If he could have, he would have eaten his words. He was very apologetic. I said to everyone this is not about respect for the manager, this is about respect for everyone. I said the players are your colleagues.

“If I don’t play him, I can play others. There was Stephen Kelly and Kevin Doyle on the bench. They have many caps. The matter is closed now. With the young we need to have patience. Sometimes they say things they regret.”

Trapattoni confirmed however the winger would once again start on the bench against Oman with the the Italian planning to give 20-year-old Manchester United winger Robbie Brady a chance to impress at Craven Cottage, after last week becoming the Republic’s record goal scorer at Under-21 level.

“He’s a (type of) player we are missing,” Trapattoni said. ”(He has) vision – he sees the pass immediately – he can shoot and works hard and he is also intelligent.”

Sean St Ledger has a knee problem and should the Leicester defender be ruled out, Wigan’s James McCarthy will be the only survivor from the team that stuttered to victory in Astana at the weekend.

Trapattoni confirmed David Forde will start in goal behind a back four of Seamus Coleman, Stephen Kelly, Marc Wilson and St Ledger, providing he is fit. Should he be ruled out, he will be replaced by Hull’s Paul McShane. Brady, McCarthy, Andy Keogh and debutant David Meyler will play in midfield while Kevin Doyle will captain the side up front alongside Shane Long.

  • It seems that with the old we need to have patience, especially as they become more and more senile.

  • Fair enough the players can’t get out of line, but come on trap change the team up! Give the young lads a chance!

The man is nuts, it seems that if your playing well and in the media spotlight you Dont get a chance. Its his team and he wont be dictated to by the media. Its sure spite him keeping the young player that are performing well in the premier league. Cox is useless so is Keane.

  • Mcclean looks like a decent player but he’s not going to step into a competitive world cup qualifier and solve all of our problems. We have a pretty average team and pool of players so give mcclean a chance to prove himself at Sunderland (he’s had a few good months) before getting carried away. I do struggle to see why Coleman is not playing though.

  • I Think Mick McCarthy would do a great job with the players in that squad.

  • So he tells the truth on twitter. He only said what we all are thinking.

  • So for the record, are we definitely going to collectively gloss over the fact that Trapattoni is the first manager in 24 years to get us to the Euros? Granted we flopped when we got there, but if I remember correctly we were in the group stage with the two finalists.

Ranting and raving at the manager seems very fashionable in modern football, but at the end of the day if it wasn’t for Trapattoni, James McClean at 23 would still be waiting to see an Irish team at the Euros, and so would I

    • We were blessed to get there and yes we played good teams but there’s a difference between being beaten and being humiliated. Then he just does the same thing again. Could’ve changed things at half time but no. More of the same crap. Does he even know how to play another way? We have some decent players who can play on the ground and down the wings but he chooses donkeys who hoof the ball up all day. It was like watching a dog barking at a vacuum cleaner.

Trap got us there with no game plan or ability to either compete against good teams or beat bad ones.
I would say the likes of Dunne and given got us there with some remarkable performances in the face of adversity. We fell over the line through luck rather than design. We were totally unprepared and humiliated, it was a waste of time qualifying to be honest. He seems to have it both ways, when we play shit and get a result, we hear it is only the result that matters, when we play shit and get beaten as in the euros, it isn’t the result that matters or else he would have been sacked straight afterwards.

Brendan , yes we got to the Euros but if we had have met anybody else in the play offs we probably wouldn’t have playing that style of football

  • McLean has had one decent season,he’s done nothing yet,he should get his head down and get on with it or piss off with that Wally Gibson who thinks cause he’s a former man utd player he should be selected automatically,im not traps biggest fan but some of these fringe players need to make themselves impossible to be left out and leave Twitter to retired pros and bitter journemen footballers

    • Here here mick. Gibson was a man united carling cup player whom united let go because he couldn’t cut the mustard. A united team that were struggling so badly they had to coax scholes out of retirement. He moves to Everton and then expects to be a regular international player all of a sudden? He didn’t get a minute at the euros because of his poor attitude me thinks.

    • It was trappatoni who told Gibson he should leave united to further his career at both club and international level and then he leaves him on the bench and plays Glenn whelan who’s poison and Green, who is even worse!
