Jagielka: McGeady can thrive under Martinez

The Toffees begin their Uefa Europa League campaign at home to Wolfsburg today.

EVERTON CAPTAIN PHIL Jagielka believes that Aiden McGeady can continue to flourish for the Toffees, claiming that manager Roberto Martinez ‘makes players feel at home’.

The Toffees begin their Uefa Europa League campaign at home to Wolfsburg on Thursday, where Jagielka believes that McGeady can continue his good form thanks to Martinez’s playing style.

“Aido (Aiden McGeady) came in last year just after Christmas after having a long time off, and he would be the first to admit it took him a bit of time to settle in, but obviously he’s started the season fantastically well,” Jagielka told reporters.

“The environment that we have created here over many years ,and obviously then the manager coming in and his flavour on top of that. We all know that as footballers you play better when you feel comfortable in your surroundings, and that’s the main thing that we try to do here.”

Jagielka has seen first hand the influence Martinez has over players, with the 41-year-old inspiring confidence in his squad.

“The manager makes players feel at home not only with the relationship he has, but obviously the tactics that he employs,” the defender revealed.

“The style of football we have come accustomed to at Everton means that these sort of players do get frustrated when you don’t give them the opportunity to play the way they want to, but obviously they have thrived under the manager’s leadership.”
