HE MAY NOT be a Fair City actor but Jack McGrath will, no doubt, tell his grandchildren all about the day he scored a try in Brian OโDriscollโs final home game. The Leinster prop came off the bench to score his first Test try on the afternoon Irish rugby fans gave OโDriscoll a rapturous Lansdowne Road send-off.
โIโm delighted to be honest,โ said McGrath. โItโs nice to get on and try and make an impact. The other lads on the bench got a few tries as well, so itโs nice to get on and make an impact. Thatโs what Joe [Schmidt] wants; he wants us to fit in, be disciplined and just know your stuff.โ
McGrath paid tribute to OโDriscollโs talent and will to win, noting that the centre achieved the Test caps record of 140 despite serious shoulder and ankles injuries in the past decade. Asked for his memories of the countryโs highest try-scorer, the loose-head said, โObviously him scoring the [three] tries in France was a massive one. His tries against England for the Triple Crown the year after theyโd won the World Cup, stuff like that.
โWhen you come into the senior squad with Leinster and Ireland initially, heโs a very easy guy to approach. Heโs quite funny and heโs got a bit of humour, so you can have a bit of craic with him. That kind of breaks down barriers as well.โ McGrath added:
I suppose thereโs a lot of hard work that went into [getting here today]. If you dwell on it too much, the occasion will pass you by. You have to step back and enjoy those times as well. This is a time youโll look back on for the rest of your life. Itโs a pleasure to have been part of it. I donโt think there has been anyone like that in Irish sport.โ
The 24-year-old praised teammates Sean Cronin and Cian Healy for their second-half tries and admitted the loss of Italyโs talismen, Martin Castrogiovanni and Sergio Parisse, had aided Ireland on their way to a 46-7 win. โI think losing Castro early definitely did [give Ireland a psychological boost], because heโs the cornerstone and went off early. It was probably disappointing for them and when we saw him come off, we know his scrum power and his work around the field is a massive thing for them. When they lost him Iโd think they worried a bit.
โBut theyโre still a quality side without those guys in it,โ McGrath continued. โGuys coming on like Cittadini, heโs a very experienced guy. Losing those two guys [Castro and Parisse] was bad, but theyโve come so far in the last two seasons that it shouldnโt really bother them.โ
There is a strong possibility that McGrath may be drafted in from the start against France next weekend following Healyโs 52nd minute withdrawal for an ankle injury. The French pack, he declared, would be a tough Parisian prospect.
โAs I said, Italy was a stepping stone. They were a big, tough pack so it was good to get stuck into them and they really worked our maul today. Thereโs a few parts we can work on in that, and our scrum as well. Thereโs always a things to work on after games like this, but weโre just happy with the win. Weโll go back to the drawing board on Monday.โ

Might have been better to put off posting this celebratory article for a little while
@Kevin Ryan: yes itโs a bit like the media are shovelling it rather than spoiling us, more curry chips than Ferrero Roche, oh wait, I prefer the formerโฆ.
Itโs like the 42 has become the Joe Schmidt tribute page this summer. I know things arenโt going well right now but can we leave it off until the RWC is finished ? Thatโs the litmus test for any coach, no matter how successful you are between world cups.
@Daire Cullinane:
That is your litmus test not mine ::if you were following Ireland since the 60s you would know what I mean ::Do better in W C great but I would never give up those days against N Z :: SA:: Aus:: England ::If you followed it for 10 years what would you know about all the loses we have felt over the 40 years :: no matter what happens next month you can never take that those years away from US

Are ye having a laugh? Are ye trying to push people who read your content away?
Dear Volkswagen I always take a dim view of brands that refuse to sponsor or support a sports team directly, but are wallets out to hijack the coverage of said sport. Grow a pair and get stuck in. If you do already it would be a great idea for example, to begin your speil with VW; proud sponsors of Clontarf/Garryowen/etc and then blah blah away. I buy sponsors products as a rule. But, you have a long way to go to match Land Rover in this game.
We all love Rugby .We all want Ireland to do well
When things go off kilter the Provincial garbage comes to the fore. Mostly from the Munster crowd ,the blame game.Joe has beaten everybody when winning I have read laughable comments on Johnny Sexton would you have him as a Captain ?
Munster supporters reign it in cos there will always be a rainy day were you can enjoy yourselves stomping on other provincial players ,can you stop for one moment being the most childish churlish posters on here .
This is the WC I see green there is no P in Ireland
Not a first series win in Australia
