‘It’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong’ – Trapattoni has been ‘negligent’, says Dunphy

“I don’t care if he wins the European Championships.”

EAMON DUNPHY LAUNCHED a blistering attack on Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni last night.

The Italian played it safe when selecting his 24-man panel for the international friendly with the Czech Republic on 29 February.

And yesterday when asked by Bill O’Herlihy to discuss the Italian’s choices in the run-up to a Euro 2012 campaign this summer in Poland, Dunphy blasted Trap’s omission of the in-form Sunderland winger James McClean and (the injured) Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark.

“I think he has neglected his duty. I feel that he believes the system is more important than the players,” he said on RTÉ’s coverage of the Champions League action.

“He seems to forget that we’ve got World Cup qualifiers beginning in September and that these young players will be needed for the future of Irish soccer.

“I think there’s players in that squad who shouldn’t be in it. I’m very disappointed with the way he’s done his job, despite the fact that we’ve qualified for the European Championship finals, which was his first remit.

“So, I’m a dissident. I think he hasn’t been hands-on enough, he hasn’t seen enough games, he’s not in touch with what talent is available to him. [Wes] Hoolahan at Norwich has been outstanding for two years now, never got near the squad, should be in the squad in my view.

“It’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong.  I don’t care if he wins the European Championships. It’s wrong,” he added.

Ireland yesterday jumped three places in FIFA’s world rankings to now lie in 20th position.

Do you agree with Dunphy?

  • James McClean should be in that squad. I agree with Dumphy 100%,

  • Can’t really disagree much with what Eamon Dunphy says there. Apart from the fact that he doesn’t care if we win the European Championships. I think he might change his tune if we even got out of the group. However to overlook players that are so obviously on form in favour of blind player loyalty is so frustrating. Can’t understand that mentality at all, surely it can’t hurt to try out some players in a friendly like this. Wes Hoolahan has been treated very poorly in all this, even big Jack was open to giving a chance to the 3 amigos in 94 (Gary Kelly, Jason McAteer and Phil Babb). It does strike me of laziness from Mr Trapattoni. James McClean is the sort of unknown prospect that could be an ace up our sleeve in games where we a chasing a result late on. Would love to have seen him get into this squad also.

  • Dunphy is a fool, calling Trap incompetent for not calling up Ciaran Clark……Clark is injured and out for 4 weeks ffs!,These pundits play the populist card every single time and so many people keep falling for it. Get behind the team and the manager and support them instead of constantly criticising them.

That’s all you need to know about Dunphy and his opinion. Whatever way the wind is blowing, he’ll set himself against it. It’s how he defines himself. If Trapp was under the kosh for playing beautiful football but losing, Dunphy would be there defending him to the hilt.

Dunphy never got any media coverage for being agreeable. He knows that, and so should we by now.

  • Dunphy said the same about Andy Reid and Stephen Ireland etc. but Trap was always proved right, Trap knows more about football than any of us ever will, have faith and ignore Dunphy. COYBIG

  • I do agree with dunphy it’s time to try out new players it’s the perfect opportunity leading up to the championships. It is not uncommon for major players to get injuries before a world cup or euro’s so trap needs to keep that in mind and give some fringe players a chance incase a scenario like that develops.

  • Cue the dunphy haters. “What has he done, who has he managed” etc etc etc. its just an opinion that he is being paid for by rte. We dont really have to take him seriously. But saying that i see what he is trying to say and i agree with some of it.

  • This is the guy that called for Traps job for not including James McCarthy when he was flavour of the month. Now it’s McClean. Yes these guys have talent and will go places in the future but rushing them into the senior squad will not help. We’ve seen it time and again across the pond with the England team, young lads being rushed onto it to their detriment. There’s no point in throwing them in at the deep end and asking them to sink or swim. They need to be brought forward carefully and surely. There’s a massive step up between Premiership and International according to all the footballers I’ve ever heard talk about it. Dunphy is a fool, more than that, he’s a fools fool. Lives on saying inane crap for media attention. Wouldn’t care myself except that RTÉ are paying him for his opinion out of our pockets. RTÉ, I want my license fee back please!!!

  • Eamon said the same thing about Jack Charlton’s Ireland.

There is no long-term in international football…it’s all about the next result. The fact that we’ve qualified will in itself do more for football in this country than giving young players ‘a run’ in the squad, bless their cotton socks. If we do well in the Euros, regardless of who he leaves out (and barring injuries, McLean, Pilkington etc can all forget it), there will be huge knock on effects, as there were after Euro 88 and Italia 90.

Eamon seems to be judging him on the 2014 Qualifiers already! Wasn’t that Stan’s approach? Introducing youngsters, giving players first caps to ‘blood’ them? Sod that, international matches don’t come around that often. Find a formula that works, fine tune it, stick with it, and MAYBE we could spring a surprise or two in Poland.

  • Trap has a great knowledge of the game, and he has the trophies to go with it. When he steps down we’ll be lucky to get anyone who can come anywhere near him in terms of coaching achievements and ability to get the most from limited resources. He’s done extremely well to get us where we are and I couldn’t care less if the football is boring, the people who complain that it’s boring will still be on the edge of their seats when we’re playing Spain and Italy at the Euros!

That said, I can’t understand his decision to leave McClean out of the squad for the upcoming friendlies. Trap’s system so I uses wide players to attack so I can only assume he’s been left out because Trap hasn’t watched him play. That wouldn’t surprise me as he doesn’t go to many matches at all, and Dunphy is right to criticise him for that.

  • Trap ain’t stupid, he knows McLean should be in the squad.wgat he is doing is being loyal to the players that got him to the euros.there will be injuries in the run up to the summer and he will be drafted in

    Reply
    • That’s the problem he should be thinking a head to the possibility of injuries and he’s not. The players he called up this time know the system well, but say if they get injured just before the euros and a new squad member is brought in, he is going to have to adapt to traps style very quickly and in high pressure good odds for failure. I think Dunphy has a point but just makes it like a bull in china shop

Dunphy is only after the sensationalist headline now rather than any real analysis. It’s ridiculous he’s putting his own agenda ahead of the obvious achievements of the team. It’s even more ridiculous that some people take him seriously. ‘Even if we win the European Championships, he’s wrong’…he’s a joke, no real soccer fan would support anything he says.

Incredible lack of appreciation shown by some fans here. Trap has gotten us to the top table for the first time in years and suddenly everyone knows whats best for the squad. Amazing that people in Ireland will always find a way to moan about something. Our system is based on hard work and loyalty. Drafting in McClean on the back of a handful of good performances would go against the system. Clark is part of Traps plans and will probably make the final squad. Coleman has also broken into the squad so Trap is not immune to adding new players. People need to get a grip. Hoolahan and Pilkington could still get in the squad. For all the McClean lovers, tell me who you would drop from the squad? Its a 23 man panel. Duff? Hunt? McGeady? If you are so against Trap why not feck off and support someone else this summer? Don’t bring that negativity to Poland thank you very much

hmm… what possible basis could Trap have for thinking his system trumps the overwhelming talent pool available to Irish soccer team???

  • Poor management really. why not mix it up. especially now with just friendly matches comin up. really is baffling excluding young talent. Traps a very stubborn man. Just hope it doesn’t backfire on him. Eamon is spot. unlike the English lickAss pundits who are afraid to voice there true feelings!

  • When the pool of decent players is so shallow, an effective system has to be the most important thing. McLean is in a good run of form, but so was Clinton Morrison before the 2002 World Cup. Funny, I don’t hear Dunphy clamouring for Andy Reid anymore. Wes Hoolahan has been in decent form, but he would have been, as Whelan and Andrews were, overrun in the Luzhniki in the 0-0 against Russia. Would he have been there in his own box to make the vital block that Andrews did that night though? I really don’t think so.

  • As usual Eamons talking out of his h**e. James Mc Clean has had a few good games, so that qualifies him a place in the squad? He’s flavour of the month. If he keeps on playing well, then he’ll get his spot in the squad. Eamon is being sensationalist for his own purpose. I never doubt Trappatoni, simple reason being that he has been there, done it all and has the shirt to prove it.

  • As usual, Dunphy speaks the truth about trap, won’t do any good tho, were still going to be rubbish over there!

Boo hoo, the world is bad, everybody hates me, it’s not fair. At least we’re over there. Typical of some Irish people, it doesn’t matter how well we do (in anything) you’re the kind of person who’ll never be happy and wants to drag us down.

  • Eamonn Dunphy is eptimozing the classic barstooler approach, Irish fans love having an influence over the team and this is no different. Trap hasnt done his job? So his job wasnt to qualify? The fact of the matter is international football isnt about the in form players its about a solidfied squad. Look at ’02 Jason McAteer one of our most important players but yet nowhere near an club team spot, in Dunphys logic he shouldn’t have been there, same with Gary Breen.

This media hype around players is so boring, yes James McClean is brilliant but what kind of effect on the squad would leaving out Stephen Hunt have? Someone whose bubbly demenaeour and experience can help a player.

So Eamon if your reading this, your talking rubbish, as usual!!

I would have liked to seen mclean an hoolahan in the squad, but Trap has more knowledge of football then anyone who has ever had any dealings with football in this country. Believe in the system he has. Trust it. It works. And if something works, even if it ain’t nice to watch, there’s no reason to fix it.

Dunphy spot on for a change. Trappatoni is negligent as he suggests. James Mc Clean’s omission is baffling. Taking the best players available is not important to Trap. Loyalty and stubbornness above common sense. He doesn’t fancy Ireland’s chances and it is damage limitation!
