It’s t-shirt time: 9 athletes who got a message off their chest

Mario Balotelli asked ‘Why Always Me?’ during Sunday’s derby demolition of local rivals United. But he’s not the first to reveal a fashionable message.

AS BETTER MEN, than I have said: it’s t-shirt time.

Goal-scorer Mario Balotelli was the coolest man in Old Trafford on Sunday as he showed off his newest piece of kit.

He’s not the first athlete to show off a homemade, bespoke under-shirt.

Here’s some of our favourites…

It’s t-shirt time: 9 athletes who got a message off their chest
1 / 9
  • It's t-shirt time!

When Conor Mortimer scored in the 2009 Connacht final against Galway he took the time to pay tribute to the recently deceased King of Pop. And he even spelled Jackson's first name the Irish way.
  • It's t-shirt time!

Andres Iniesta scored the goal, four minutes from the end of last summer's World Cup final in South Africa, to earn the title for Spain. Moments after he did, the Barca playmaker tore off his jersey to reveal the slogan "Dani Jarque siempre con nosotros" or "Dani Jarque always with us" to honour his late friend and former Espanyol defender who died from a heart attack.
  • It's t-shirt time!

Andrey Arshavin often celebrates his goals by pressing his finger to his lips as he wheels away from goal. When, against Barcelona he scored, the Russian instead pulled his Arsenal top over his head to reveal a t-shirt... depicting himself pressing his finger to his lips. He missed an opportunity, the next time he scored, to send the football world into an eternal loop by displaying a t-shirt with a picture of himself showing off the previous t-shirt.
  • It's t-shirt time!

After AC Milan beat Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final, Kaka - a devout Christian - sank to his knees and revealed an 'I Belong To Jesus'-emblazoned top. He is now owned by Real Madrid as well, of course.
  • It's t-shirt time!

Messi likes nothing better than getting the magic markers out on a Friday night and defacing a perfectly good vest. Here, in a game against Real Madrid last year, he writes "Come on, man" in Spanish. But he's since wished his 'Mami' a happy birthday too through the medium of clothing. Nice.
  • It's t-shirt time!

Thierry Henry was quite good wasn't he? After he scored against Liverpool in 2000, he symapthised with all those who'd backed a goal-less stalemate. He also, you'll remember, had another one 'For the West Indies'.
  • It's t-shirt time!

If he hadn't already, Robbie 'God' Fowler earned legend status amongst Liverpool fans with this show of support for the striking Liverpool dockers.
  • It's t-shirt time!

The Buffalo Bills wide receiver cast himself in the role of Heath Ledger's The Joker as he revealed a 'Why So Serious' message under his shirt last November. It didn't hurt that opponents Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens referred to themselves as Batman and Robin. Wham!
  • It's t-shirt time!

Mario Balotelli asks, simply, 'Why Always Me?'. The insouciant goal celebration in the Manchester derby rout of United came less than a day-and-a-half after he hit the headlines again by setting his bathroom alight with fireworks. What a guy.
