Italian centre has spleen removed after shipping huge Fijian blow

Luca Morisi was in a stable condition last night after ‘suffering trauma to his abdomen’.

ITALIAN CENTRE LUCA MORISI has woken up this morning shy a spleen after undergoing emergency surgery on Saturday.

The Treviso back was hit by a thundering Asaeli Tikoirotuma in the early stages of Italy’s 37-31 victory over Fiji. Morisi went off for treatment before briefly returning to play. He lasted less than two minutes back on the field before he was substituted for further assessment.

The Italian team doctor took the safe option of sending Morisi to Cremona hospital and it proved the right move. The player was immediately sent for invasive surgery. A statement from Italy read:

Morisi was admitted to hospital where he had his spleen removed as a result of suffering trauma to his abdomen early in the Test match against Fiji. The surgery was a complete success. His condition is stable.”

Fiji collected an international record of five yellow cards during their loss and at one stage of the second-half had only 11 players on the pitch. Luciano Orquera kicked 17 points and Italy crossed for four tries to bounce back from a 50-20 loss to Australia last week. They led 30-10 after 58 minutes but needed a late Monoa Vosawai try to see them home following a Fijian fightback.
