Irish women endure second defeat to US despite improved performance

The Olympic champions are now 20 games unbeaten in total, following their 2-0 win.

THE IRISH NATIONAL womenโ€™s football were beaten 2-0 by USA in Arizona on Saturday night, having previously lost 5-0 to the same opposition last Wednesday.

The Americans took the lead in the first minute, with last Wednesdayโ€™s hat-trick hero Alex Morgan opening the scoring, finishing calmly after being played through by Lauren Cheney.

The hosts then went further ahead after 28 minutes, with Megan Rapinoeโ€™s deflected effort from the edge of the box doubling her sideโ€™s advantage.

An excellent display from goalkeeper Emma Byrne kept the scoreline respectable for the Irish, who can take some encouragement from an improved display.

Meanwhile, following todayโ€™s win, the US are now 20 games unbeaten in total.
