Irish Eye: St Ledger on target as Foxes progress to FA Cup quarters

The Leicester defender’s header sends Norwich packing, a familiar face is on the scoresheet for Celtic and a former Airtricity League striker opens his account in League One.

EVERY MONDAY, WE scan the passports, check the family trees and cross-reference with the “granny rule” to keep you informed about the ups and downs of all the Irish (and Irish-eligible) footballers in England and Scotland. Think of us as the Tardelli to your Trap, if you will…

FA Cup

Sean St Ledger (Norwich City 1-2 Leicester City)

Foxes defender Sean St Ledger opened the scoring for visitors as Leicester claimed the scalp of Norwich at Carrow Road. The goal arrived five minutes in when a fourth successive corner was headed home at the near post by the 27-year-old.

Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City 1-2 Leicester City)

In that same game, Dubliner Hoolahan saw his 23rd minute penalty kept out by Kasper Schmeichel but was first to the rebound and equalised for the Canaries. Anthony Pilkington also played for the 23rd time this season in the defeat.

Here are the highlights from that game:

Jon Walters (Crawley Town 0-2 Stoke City)

Walters scored Stoke’s first and his tenth of the season from the spot in the Potters 2-0 Cup win over League Two side Crawley Town. Glenn Whelan and Rory Delap, who received a straight red after 17 minutes, were picked in the starting XI by Tony Pulis and they meet Liverpool in the last eight of the competition.

Npower League One

Stephen Gleeson (MK Dons 5-0 Oldham)

Former Wolves midfielder Stephen Gleeson grabbed No4 in MK Dons’ 5-0 drubbing of Oldham to help Karl Robinson’s side continue their promotion push in League One. Darren Potter played alongside Gleeson in the centre of the park.

Graham Cummins (Sheffield United 2-1 Preton North End)

Cork native Graham Cummins opened his account for new club Preston North End in only his second start since joining from Cork City last month. The 24-year-old scored with his head from Nicky Hunt’s cross on 38 minutes but couldn’t prevent Preston suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Blades.

Martin Rowlands (Yeovil 3-2 Colchester)

Irish international Martin Rowlands, on loan at Colchester from QPR, was on the losing side at Huish Park but did get his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season. The midfielder was the victim of a two-footed tackle from Kieran Agard, who received his marching orders for it, then picked himself up to scored the resulting free-kick.

Scottish Premier League

Anthony Stokes (Hibernian 0-5 Celtic)

With his 18th goal in all competitions, Anthony Stokes got Celtic off to a good start in what proved an extremely one-sided game at Easter Road. The 23-year-old striker headed past Graham Stack in the Hibs goal after 14 minutes on a miserable day for Pat Fenlon and his Irish contingent of on-loan defender Matt Doherty and front pair Eoin Doyle and Roy O’Donovan.
