Irish champion Brammeier to join Quick Step in 2012

The 26-year-old time triallist and strongman will join the Belgian outfit at the conclusion of the current season.

FOR MANY CYCLISTS and team officials, the transition between the 2011 and 2012 road racing seasons will be anything but a smooth one.

With HTC-Highroad’s demise now imminent and Radioshack looking set to merge with the Schleck brothers’ Leopard Trek team, dozens of cyclists– a significant portion of the peloton– have found themselves cast in doubt.

One cyclist who needn’t worry, however, is HTC’s two-time Irish national champion Matt Brammeier; he’s secured a contract with Belgian team Quick Step.

Speaking to Eurosport about the signing, team manager Patrick Lefévère was quick to hail the all-rounder’s pedigree, decribing him as a “rider the team wants to bet on in the near future.”

“Matthew is entering an important phase in his career and we think he can even improve in our group.”

Brammeier will be competing in both the time trial and road race at this week’s UCI Road World Championships.
