THE IRELAND U19 women’s team made history yesterday by booking their place in the semi-finals of the European Championships in Norway.
Appearing at the competition for the first time, Dave Connell’s team took maximum points from three games by following up victories over Spain and England with a 2-1 win over Sweden.
They fell behind to Stina Blackstenius’ opener but McCarthy equalised with a looping header on 21 minutes before Connolly’s brilliant free-kick went in off the crossbar ten minutes from time.
Maybe if there was more publicity (televising) re qualifying games and the Finals to this tournament you wouldn’t have had to make that comment Joe, though I understand where you’re coming from. I didn’t know about this until today. Well done Ireland Ladies.

Good effort all the same by the Swedish goalie, she must have jumped at least six inches off the ground trying to save that free, not to mention those cat-like reflexes considering she only had around nine seconds to see it drifting towards the goal and get into position. Very unlucky not to make the save
2 seconds more like! She looked like she was expecting a cross and was wrong footed. She was never going to get to it after that. It couldn’t have been stuck any tighter into the top corner.

My daughters play GAA at home and abroad. Lady’s football is spell-bindingly good. Looks like ladies are after wracking the level up a notch or two with the soccer. I’ve never watched a ladies soccer match in my life – but I think that’s about to change.
