Report: Ireland unable to claw back early deficit against South Africa

The Emerging Ireland squad matched South Africa’s try-count, but penalties cost them dear.

IRELAND’S EMERGING RUGBY squad were out-gunned 19-8 by their South African equivalents in the Tbilisi Cup today.

Having trailed 10-3 at half time, Ulster wing Michael Allen touched down the only try for Allen Clarke’s side just after the hour mark to spark hope of a big comeback.

By that stage, however, the President’s XV were well in control with a 16-8 lead thanks to three penalties from Carl Bezuidenhout and a conversion of Alshaun Bock’s 20th minute try.

Trailing 10-0 minutes before half time, Ian Keatley put the first points on the board for Ireland and could have brought the deficit to just four points at the break, but was off target.

Keatley’s next kick at goal was the conversion attempt off Allen’s score. That too trailed wide and, despite winning a sizeable chunk of territory, Ireland were unable to muster another score after prop Ivann Espag’s sin-bin period expired.

Instead, it was the emerging ‘Boks who took the last score of the game, Bezuidenhout bringing his tally to 14 points from five kicks with an 80th minute penalty.

‘Beaker’ Hogg thanks BOD as Farrell is clearly threatened by new out-half

Oh right the old “can’t comment unless you’ve played at the highest level” crap? Easy to throw that out when you don’t like what u hear…

Hi Alex, I never said they weren’t entitled to their opinions, but I thought they were unnecessarily harsh, especially the ‘#notgoodenough’ …..the team is representing our country and giving it their best shot in difficult circumstances. Remember these guys haven’t played together before this tournament and while some of their play was rushed and error ridden, there were some nice phases of play too.
I for one am happy with their efforts. Best of luck to the U20′s tomorrow night.

They really should have won that. All the possession. Sloppy passes, and panicking everytime they got the ball instead of being patient and going through some fazes,

none of those Ireland players are going to go onto be major talents, the only guy there that has great potential is Jack McGrath. Guys like Noel Reid have spent far too long on the Leinster A team – while that South African line up is way more talented … goes to show how much more choice they have at every position – they simply have a way bigger factory of players.

That’s the thing! The pool of talent there compared to here is much bigger! We don’t have outstanding players coming through
