Sebastian Larsson warns Sweden team-mates to watch McClean

Sunderland’s Swedish midfielder comes up against an old team-mate in Dublin tomorrow night.

SEBASTIAN LARSSON HAS flagged former Sunderland team-mate James McClean as a threat that Sweden will have to watch closely.

The two line up on opposite sides tomorrow night as Sweden visit Dublin in search of three points to boost their World Cup qualification hopes — and torpedo Ireland’s.

McClean, who left Wearside to join Wigan Athletic this summer, was named today in a 4-4-2 which sees Shane Long partner captain Robbie Keane up front.

“For me it’s not a massive surprise that he’s starting,” Larsson said at Sweden’s pre-match press conference.

“I think he’s a very talented player who can offer something different to a lot of other players. I thought he had a good game when we played in Stockholm and he’s obviously one that we will need to keep our eye on.

He’s always got a no-fear attitude, at least that’s the James I know from when he broke through with Sunderland.

He tries things, he goes for it, he’s got a good left foot, and he’s not afraid to make a mistake. Not all players have got that.

Ireland, Sweden and Austria are all level on 11 points though it is Austria who have the upper hand in the race for second place by virtue of their better goal difference.

Over 45,000 fans are expected in the Aviva Stadium tomorrow for a game which will go a long way towards deciding the outcome of Group C.

Sweden’s job will be to silence that crowd, Larsson said.

“I expect a massive support for Ireland. They are well known for being fanatical and loud.

“There is a challenge in silencing them, and if you can do that it’s very beneficial.”
