Injured Dunne on standby for Germany and Faroe qualifiers

The Aston Villa defender is a major doubt for next month’s games, Giovanni Trapattoni today revealed at his squad announcement.

RICHARD DUNNE REMAINS a major doubt for Ireland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Germany and the Faroe Islands after only being named on standby by Giovanni Trapattoni.

The Italian announced a 23-man squad during his press conference at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon in which the influential Aston Villa defender, who is still struggling to overcome a groin injury, did not feature.

Trap will await news on Dunne’s fitness over the next two weeks but unless he can recover in time to play for Villa away to Spurs five days before the Germany game on October 12, he will not feature.

When asked about Dunne, Trap said: “I was in touch with him. He said I hope but it is very difficult. The club doctor, our doctor say it’s very difficult but Richard said if I play one game maybe I can be available.

I don’t think about him but I hope maybe miracle. It is very difficult. It’s better we have the option as we need to inform the club.

“It’s too long an injury and he said he makes also training. But training is training and games are games. Our opponent isn’t easy. We have to think about our opponent.”

Manchester United winger Robbie Brady capped his senior debut with a goal against Oman at Craven Cottage but the 20-year-old also has to settle for a place on the tw0-man standy list.

Elsewhere, Darron Gibson will not return after choosing to sit out the trip to Kazakhstan. The Everton midfielder is currently sidelined with a thigh strain.

There is a welcome return for Keith Fahey, however. Former St Patrick’s Athletic man Fahey was unlucky to miss out on Euro 2012 after picking up a groin injury in their final warm-up against Bosnia Herzegovina but has featured for Birmingham in recent weeks and gets the nod.

Keith Andrews, now plying his trade at Bolton Wanderers, is also back after serving a suspension picked up at Euro 2012.

Ireland squad v Germany and the Faroe Islands: Westwood, Forde, Randolph, Wilson, O’Shea, St Ledger, O’Dea, Ward, Kelly, McShane, Whelan, McCarthy, Andrews, Fahey, Coleman, McGeady, Keogh, McClean, Keane, Doyle, Long, Cox, Walters.

On standby: Dunne, Brady.

Press play: Messi joined by LOI stars on the front of FIFA 13

Ward, McShane & Keogh, possibly the three worst players ever to put on a Irish jersey, Clark & Brady should be in there instead!!!
