‘It would be an awfully proud moment to captain Ireland’ – Jamie Heaslip

The absence of the injured Brian O’Driscoll has thrown the Leinster forward into the captaincy mix.

IT MAY JUST be the luck of the draw but Jamie Heaslip has faced the press after four of Ireland’s toughest outings in the past year.

From the slow start in the World Cup [22-10 over USA], to exit at the hands of Wales [10-22], the heartache of a spurned lead against France [17-17] and the chastening first Test against the All Blacks [10-42], Heaslip has stepped forward.

“You have to go out and bat for your side essentially,” the Leinster forward told TheScore.ie.

“It can be tough and, obviously some times, it’s not the first thing you’d like to do after a game but you’ve got to wear it. You’ve got to front up.

“Whether it is a good or bad game, you’ve got to be honest about it. At least that way you can look back with no regrets.”

Captaincy conundrum

Heaslip’s frank post-game assessments, the high standards he holds for himself and teammates, and his ability to compete for club and country from the first whistle to the last, marked him out as an obvious candidate to lead Leinster when club captain Leo Cullen has been absent.

Heaslip AW12 IRFU

Puma and the IRFU have launched a new black and green Alternate Ireland Jersey which will be worn for the first time against South Africa at the Aviva Stadium on 10 November.

The Tuesday withdrawals of Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll and Rory Best, who regularly leads Ulster out, would seem to indicate that Paul O’Connell will captain his country against South Africa on 10 November.

O’Connell has only played two Heineken Cup games, for 63 and 61 minutes, this season and Declan Kidney may anoint a new stand-in captain to go with a new-look team.

“Anyone would,” replies Heaslip when the captaincy question is raised. “Any of the lads that have captained the team would tell you the same.

“I would love to captain the side. It would be an awfully proud moment.” He added:

I wouldn’t say it’s an ambition but it would be a pretty humbling thing. It is so much of an honour to do it with Leinster. It would be multiplied by a thousand when you’re doing it for your country.

“There is no better honour than to lead you teammates out to battle because that’s what it is, a battle.”

Ireland can expect nothing less than a battle when they face the Springboks on 10 November and there would be no greater pleasure for Heaslip to face the press post-match in winning circumstances.

*Heaslip, as a Puma ambassador, will be in Life Style Sports, Dundrum Town Centre, on Saturday, 3 November from 2-3pm to meet and greet fans and sign jerseys.

Heaslip’s game has changed in the past few seasons for Leinster and Ireland due to the introduction of Sean O’Brien into the team. SOB has taken on a lot of the ball carrying that Heaslip was known for. He still brings a hell of a lot to the game. Just watch him at the breakdown. The amount of ball that he turns over is the vital to the team… Same old sour grapes on here though giving a man stick about trying to do well for himself outside the game…

  • I think the target for Jamie Heaslip for the Autumn Internationals would be to rediscover his form of three years ago in an Irish Shirt and not worry about captaincy just yet.

    • He would want to lay off the big talk about fronting up until he starts doing it himself. The player of a few years ago was going the right way to be a captain and all the talk had a bit of edge to it. Its starting to sound a bit hollow now and the posturing for the captaincy is very close to arrogance given his so so form. A bit more self criticism and an honest look at himself would be more in his line for now. I only say it because he could be a great captain and when you are playing well a touch of arrogance is a good thing.

  • To say things like “Jamie isn’t aggressive enough” and has been “off the boil for years” is extremely lazy analysis. He was put in a phenomenal amount of work this season at the breakdown, has shown top-notch control at number 8 in scrums, is a great option at line-out time, and is even back scoring tries into the bargain. If you’re going to give an opinion on a player try watching him in recent action first! That Kidney didn’t come straight out and appoint Paulie as skipper suggests the role is up for debate and Heaslip has certainly earned his place in the debate.

All the rugby experts on here I see … Heaslip is having a blinder already this season for Leinster . He had 5 turnovers to his name against Cardiff ,carried 164 Meters ,a shoe in for captain.

  • It might focus his mind on rugby rather than his twitter account or his restaurant

  • Dear Jamie
it will be Paul o Connell.

  • I get the impression that Jamie is becoming more and more focused on life outside rugby, ie his restaurant. There’s no doubt that his standard has dropped from what it was 2 to 3 years ago. Personally I don’t see him bringing a lot to the captains role, but then again who else do they call upon?

  • Have to laugh at the hatred of Heaslip from Munster fans because of his ‘supposed’ lifestyle. God forbid a Munster player should wear white boots, grow a moustache or own a restaurant/bar eh?!
It just really shows that the inane ramblings of George Hook actually do actually have an impact on Irish rugby perception. Heaslip is by far the best 8 we have, a Lions test player, is in great form and has a 100% record for Leinster. It’s a no brainer really.

The stuff from Diarmuid above is classic though!!

    • Change the record will ya! I admire and respect a huge amount of Leinster players and have actually been on this site before cheering Leinster on so drop the Munster v Leinster crap will ya! I have also stated on this site that Leinster are a far better outfit than Munster currently. Driscoll, O Brien, Healy, Kearney are all players I rate highly, sadly Heaslip has played bad in the last few seasons and both I and any other provincial fan is well entitled to put their point across without having to be accused of being sour grapes or having a bias opinion. Grow up will ya!

    • Well you seem to be dragging in his personal life which seems to be a bugbear for “pride and pashun” Munster fans. To say he’s played ‘bad’ (badly?!) in the last few seasons is incorrect.

Tell me this, what is it in his “whole demeanor and personality that just doesn’t make him captain material” because you haven’t backed that up. It’s just a lazy Hookism spouted again and again by the same quota of Irish fans.

      Is it his moustache? ;)

    • No it’s the fact that when he plays a rival provence such as Munster, he is one of the more hot headed of players. A captain needs to be cool and collected, not a fella who goes around tapping heads and kneeing players in the back in vital games. Brian and Paul are mature players, dont lose the plot and act maturely at all times on the pitch, sadly the same cannot be said for Jamie, that’s not an opinion, that’s a fact! His personal life – Twitter? Not sure I get ya to be honest there!

    • Other than the NZ card, can you give an example of that against Munster?

“A captain needs to be cool and collected, not a fella who goes around tapping heads and kneeing players in the back in vital games.”

Yeah, imagine getting sent off at a crucial stage in a crucial game…

As with POC, one incident doesn’t mean he’s not captain material. Try again!

    • I am not even going to entertain someone who is trying to bring Paul O Connell down. Paul is the best player Ireland has ever produced and if you think otherwise you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. Paul is streets and miles ahead of Heaslip so stop trying to compare the two. You’re merely showing yourself up! You’re telling me Jamie is never at the centre of gauding the opposition in games?

  • Keith Woods coming out of retirement to take the captaincy, you heard it here first….

    Reply
  • I am not saying this cause I am a Munster man but Jamie Heaslip is just not captain material. There is something in his whole demeanor and personality that just doesn’t make him captain material. I don’t think, for example, he would be near as effective to gelling the different provinces as Pauly or Driscoll. I await the onslaught of Leinster fans…

  • I love how a player in such poor form can win 3 European cup medals in 4 years , considering he plays alongside two players way past they best in the centre, a secondrow not considered good enough for an Irish squad, a jumped up Outhalf, and the rest of that usless Leinster team. Yeah heaslip should retire because he’ll never do anything in rugby.
Keep watching George hook for rugby advice.

  • Heaslips been off the boil for the last 2 years, he aint agressive enough, and he’s carrying too much weight. Captaincy might be a good thing, or a bad thing, risky decision if kidney chooses him.

With a Lions tour on the horizon and the future of the Irish captaincy up for grabs, you’ll definitely see Heaslip raise his game… those kind of commercial opportunities are just too good to pass up!!

  • I think Jamie Heslip has regained a lot of his old form, and the position of Captain of the National Side should really be left to the coach and the other senior players. All he said he would regard it as a great honour if he was asked, he is hardly going to say anything else.

  • Paul o Connell is not the best player Ireland ever produced. One of the best maybe but not the best.

  • Captaincy should go to Reddan. He should be first choice number 9 and is in a pivotal position to lead.

  • The ” best player” Ireland ever produced is better left to the old fogies like my self who saw Jackie Kyle and the ” all time greats” in action over three quarters of a century.
