IRELAND’S NIGHT OF pain in Gdansk pulled in the second highest ratings figures for any Irish sporting event since 1994 with over two million viewers tuning in to watch some part of the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Spain.
Official figures released this morning show that 2,004,400 switched over at some stage to watch Billo and the boys as Ireland looked for the miracle that would keep them in Euro 2012.
And despite going a goal down inside four minutes, an average of 1.1 million fans stuck with RTÉ’s coverage for the whole night until the bitter end — where at least they had the small consolation of a particularly funny Après Match.
Last night’s figures were slightly lower than for Ireland’s first group game against Croatia where 2.03 million tuned in at some point and an average of 1.2 million watched the entire game.
