Ireland set to face Canada at Rugby World Cup after Canucks batter USA

The US Eagles will have to turn around an 18-point deficit to reach the 2015 event.

CANADA ARE ON course to each the Rugby World Cup after they demolished the US Eagles 27-9 in South Carolina.

Sparked by a superb opening try by scrumhalf Phil Mack, the Canucks raced away with the tie and ran in two more five-pointers.

The first leg win means the USA must win next week’s return tie by 19 points. If they cannot do so, Canada will be confirmed as ‘Americas One’ for the World Cup. The top side from the Americas will be pooled with Ireland, France, Italy and another European side at the 2015 event.

Mack set the tone for the emphatic win with a wonderful aerial claim and a chip and successful chase for the first try. James Pritchard kicked the conversion and two penalties to make it 13-0 at the break.

Chris Wyles got the home side on the scoreboard with three second half penalties but tries from Harry Jones and Glasgow Warriors winger DTH van der Merwe settled the one-sided contest.

The second leg takes place in Toronto on 24 August. Ireland defeated Canada 40-14 in June with Fergus McFadden scoring a hat-trick of tries.

I can’t remember if it was Clever or Emerick, but one of the prominent US players moaned about how Eddie O’Sullivan stifled their “creativity” in favour of imposing a defensive structure (the same structure saw them win their first ever WC game in 2011 and actually put a bit of shape on them). Neither flare nor defence shown by the Eagles in those highlights.

B collins,as per usual utter misinformed nonsense coming from you again..USA’s first ever win??

On another note just realised that Ireland will be playing most/nearly all their games on a Sunday that is a major bummer- really hard on fans having to make their way to games- even if they stay over in UK Sundays are dead after 11.30 on Sundays here. Pity. Even if we get to the quarters and semi’s they will be Sundays also- if we win our group D ahead of France we have a Sunday quarter final, if victorious we have a Sunday Semi final. Awful fixtures we really got the short straw of the home (european) nations

Meant that group. Emerick quote, clearly suggesting they’d had their first WC win as a team:
“In the last Rugby World Cup, we scored the least amount of tries. We had one win, but there were teams with zero wins who scored more tries than we did.”
Suggesting that that group of players had experienced more success under EOS (with that one win) than before.
‘Usual load of nonsense’? Talk about overreacting! Usual load of bile from you more like.

In 1987 USA beat Japan in the inaugural world cup. They beat the same opponents again in 2003. In 2011 they beat Russia for their third victory in world cup competition. Facts, not opinions.
