‘Bit of a mixed bag’ – Captain Heaslip reflects on Irish capitulation

Ireland finished the Six Nations campaign with just one win from five matches.

IRELAND CAPTAIN JAMIE HEASLIP has described his side’s faltering Six Nations campaign ‘a mixed bag’.

Heaslip made the statement following Ireland’s 22-15 loss to Italy in Rome – their first ever defeat to the Italians in the championship.

Ireland were shorn of at least 10 frontline players before the match and lost Luke Marshall, Keith Earls and Luke Fitzgerald before the first-half was out.

“Bit of a mixed bag to be honest,” Heaslip commented. “A lot of guys have taken the opportunity to step up, when given the chance, to wear the green jersey.

“I think of all the new caps we’ve had and guys who haven’t had as much international experience as others. I couldn’t be prouder about the way they have gone about their work.” He added:

The frustrating part is, in all games we’ve lost there has been a score or two in it. There’s been too many errors, we have given teams shots at goal, turned over too much easy ball at the setpiece and not converted enough opportunities.

“We’ve got to learn from it. It’s a young bunch, an inexperienced bunch but you’ve got to learn from this moving forward.”

Asked to reflect on where the winning and losing of the game was, Heaslip said, “It’s too fresh for me to pinpoint but, off the top of my head, we gave away too many easy shots at goal.

“We gave away too many turnovers at the setpiece. They cut it off at the source. That’s a big launching platform for any team.”

He confessed that the latest set of injuries to befall the team had cost them dearly.

“[It is tough], especially when you see that Peter O’Mahony had to move to the wing for 60 minutes,” he declared.

“That’s just what happened. You move on. It’s nothing new to us in this championship. It’s not ideal.

“You have to adapt, move on. Peter on the wing from setpieces. Even with that, God, we were still in the hunt. There was a point between us with 10 minutes to go.”

Tough calls

Head coach Declan Kidney believes that Donnacha Ryan was ‘committed to the tackle’ that earned him a late trip to the sin bin and deflated the Irish challenge. He also noted that the Italians ‘lodged themselves on the ball quite well’ when Ireland were pressing for a try at 16-12.

Asked to explain Ireland’s lineout woes, Kidney responded, “Italy have a good lineout. You have to give credit to them… it’s something that we can work on.”

“In terms of preparation of the lads,” he added, “I couldn’t speak highly enough of it. I think we just have to transfer that onto the pitch.”

The captain was asked if Brian O’Driscoll had made any announcements about playing on or retiring. He replied, “I don’t know whether this is the end for him or not; you’d have to ask Brian.”

Kidney added, “I think [O'Driscoll] has had a strong Six Nations, given everything that was going on for him. His game against Wales was outstanding. He was good against France and I thought he played well today.

“He’s earned the time and space to be given that to make up his own mind. Players are the only ones that know when the time is.”

Was at the match in Rome. Fierce disappointing that Ireland never got into the game. Italy deserved to win.

    • This disaster has been coming for a long time, nothing to do with heaslip or his post match analysis, it falls at the feet of the irfu and kidney. Since 2009 we haven’t been able to string 2 good performances together. Sadly I can no longer see a championship in us for along time to come. The 6 nations is Wales’ to throw away for the foreseeable future. But I hope we can regroup quickly.

  • Same shit diagnosis of the game by heaslip..Another mixed bag.. Seriously!! He’s after giving the same speech after every bad result this season..
    Needs to get a grip..

  • I think we can all agree that Ireland’s Six Nations offering this year was a shambles…I certainly won’t be buying the DVD.

  • Surely the IRFU have PR staff that can have a word with Heaslip BEFORE he has to go into the ring with the media for post match thoughts…
He needs to learn what to say.. He leaves himself open for a right bashing after these inteviews.. Hopefully he comes good..

  • Dont get all the personal abuse being thrown about and its a very poor reflection on us and the Journal.
He didnt perform granted but tis fairly low and cowardly to make some of the cheap shots on here.

  • Heaslip talks some rot! He amongst others had a terrible tournament and needs to have a long think about it. He hasnt a notion of going on loins tour in june. Has kidney been sacked yet???

    • Heaslip was a disastrous choice as captain. He had a very poor season as a player and should not have been selected as a player had not he been captain. Ireland needs a new No 8 and a new captain as a new coach.

    • I disagree about the new number 8. Heaslip might be a little out of form but he is a very good player, was arguably one of our very best in recent times. Everyone goes out of form but he’s still the best 8 we have.

    • Heaslip has not performed consistently or well in an Irish jersey for two years now. The debate on whether he should have been made captain is offset by the fact that he shouldn’t have been in the team in the first place. Missed tackles, giving away crucial penalties, slow and cumbersome at the back of the scrum, v little line breaks considering the amount of possession he gets. No one can dispute his potential but he is a long way from it.
The best 8 in Ireland is farcical, a better balanced backrow would have seen O’brien at 8. Even POM is more effective at 8 though he is better suited to the flanks.
And just on the captaincy, his attitude, headphones at the coin toss, and insulting post match analysis of it being a mixed bag affair- Yes we are unlucky with injury etc but we can see through those bluffing, particularly the more experienced players.
Heaslip can and will hopefully recover, sometimes the catalyst to this can be omission!

    • Perfect analysis of the Heaslip situation Damien. He shouldn’t be a no 1 choice at all based on his form last few years. What has he done since 2009 for Ireland. Under performed regularly is what. Taking the captaincy from BOD was a bad decision from Kidney, the 1st of many this championship. eg O Gara. Kidney had been excellent for Ireland but needs to go now and let someone else with fresh ideas come in. There’s some good young players coming through and they need a new hand to guide them.

    • @ Fergal. What? Heaslip has been one of our best players? He’s our best number 8? Are you watching rugby on ESPN Classic or something?

      @Steve. Well said.

  • You know what, things could be a lot worse right now, I mean, look at France! At least we didn’t get the wooden spoon. Also, England, stopped at the last hurdle, again! Now they’ll have to burn all that “Grand Slam Winners ’13″ merchandise.

It is always darkest before the dawn, come forth our new blood, new generation, and hopefully new coach!

    Ireland shall be great again!!

    • very true this is a team that is getting primed for 2015 people tend to forget that France had all their first team players fit as did England wales Scotland and Italy we were decimated with injuries and players that had very little international experience were called in to the squad.and we leaked very few tries compared to other teams what let us down is our penalty count we need a captain (rory best would be my choice) that will bring discipline and cool heads to the pitch. it will happen dont write this team off just because of the six nations this team will come good when Joe Schmidt comes on board as kidneys days are numbered he has been a good servant to the IRFU and has given us reasons to cheer so dont slate the man. his style of rugby is not played much ireland when they have played too their ability play a free flowing style of rugby which will come to the fore when a younger coach comes along.

    • Very well put. We saw in the first 40 against Wales just how dangerous our team is!! Without lookibg for excuses you absolutely can’t overestimate the impact of all of those injuries. I don’t think we ever stood a chance with so many of our rooms players missing.

    • We weren’t dangerous against the welsh. They were fast asleep for 40 minutes.

    • ‘When Joe Schmidt comes on board’ – Do you know something the world doesn’t. Reckon he won’t take it and he’d probably be mad to. He’s waiting for a good Southern Hemisphere job but I could hopefully be wrong. Ireland will be a year or two in transition. IRFU need to make many changes to the whole international setup but as long as they get rid of the dinosaurs and make sure they don’t listen to the Mick Galway/ Foley lobby group it will be a step in the right direction. There needs to be a big change in everything and some IRFU yes man will be a nightmare.

    • @theheathen it was wishful thinking on my behalf getting Joe Schmidt on board the IRFU don’t have the foresight to employ someone from the southern hemisphere as the IRFU don’t like being told when they are doing a bad job look at warren Gatling great coach got the bums rush. the players are there the talent is there all that is needed is guidance and belief results will come once these are in place

    • Yeah look at the success of the four Irish Provinces and then the contrasting Irish International setup.
Then look at the Welsh club setup and their contrasting international success.
I really hope that the IRFU get a progressive coach in and let him have a free reign from getting in a world class scrum and lineout coach and sorting out the fitness and conditioning. I don’t think the injuries were all bad luck.

    • Best couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo. Was only a nailed on starter because Strauss was injured and neither sherry nor varley can stamp their mark on the munster team. Ryan should have been captain – the only nailed on starter based on form going into the 6n.
Also, if Deccie knew what an openside was, heaslip would have been at home, with SOB or POM at 6 and 8 between them.

  • @Paul Hogan, if Heaslip was thinking of going on a ‘ loins’ tour anywhere he could forget the rugby!!
He’d have a serious fitness problem.

  • Exactly Alan – the lad is arrogant and thinks his a world class player somewhere in his head! Well he ain’t and never should have been number 8 let alone captain.

Ok ok, we’re currently not so hot at the rugby but sure isn’t that what makes the wins when they do come even more special?
It’s sport and its for enjoyment. The Irish players are all pros and I’m sure loosing is never something they enjoy so ease up a little.
