Injury update: Scans for Gilroy and O'Callaghan as Sexton expected to be up and running this week

Next up, France in Dublin.

AFTER YESTERDAY’S HUGELY-disappointing defeat in Edinburgh, Declan Kidney was counting the cost on his Ireland players’ bodies today.

The IRFU have confirmed this evening that there are two main injury concerns in the wake of the Scotland game.

Ulster winger Craig Gilroy — who came off with a sore groin yesterday — underwent an MRI scan earlier which didn’t reveal ‘any significant damage’.

Donnacha Ryan, meanwhile, will also rehab this week after a scan showed no ‘structural damage’ to a bruised shoulder.

Jonathan Sexton is expected to begin running again this week as he tries to recover from a hamstring injury. Gordon D’Arcy — suffering from a foot injury — will be reassessed next week as he’ll be in a boot for another 10 days.

“Mike McCarthy’s medial knee ligament injury has progressed well to the point that he is also running and he will be retested at the end of the week to assess his availability for the France game,” a statement from the Union concludes.
