Schmidt managing multiple injuries as Ireland prepare for Springboks test

Leinster’s Darragh Fanning and Andrew Conway of Munster were drafted in as cover this week at Carton House.

IRELAND HEAD COACH Joe Schmidt has a number of injury concerns as he prepares his side for their clash with South Africa in Dublin on 8 November.

Leinster wing Darragh Fanning and Munster wide man Andrew Conway have been added to the squad on a temporary basis this week as cover, although both players will return to their provinces tomorrow.

Munster loosehead James Cronin, who was capped on the June tour of Argentina, did not join up with the group at Carton House yesterday due to an ankle injury he sustained in his province’s meeting with Saracens on Friday night.

The 23-year-old is instead awaiting specialist feedback on the issue, with the expectation being that Cronin will be ruled out for some weeks.

Leinster duo Rob Kearney [back spasms] and Mike Ross [groin] continue to rehab their injuries, and the hope is that they will be available to train fully next week.

Centre Gordon D’Arcy came off with a groin injury during Leinster’s win over Castres on Sunday, and the IRFU state that he “has been assessed and will be managed over the coming days.”

Ulster’s Stuart Olding and Tommy Bowe are currently being managed through the return-to-play protocols having sustained “concussive injuries” in the bruising encounter with Toulon at Kingspan Stadium.

Finally, Leinster loosehead Jack McGrath took part in the training session at Carton House earlier today and has shown no ill effects around a previously troublesome calf muscle.

Schmidt will be hopeful that several of the aforementioned players make swift recoveries as he prepares for the visit of the physically powerful Springboks, already without the likes of Sean O’Brien, Cian Healy, Marty Moore and Keith Earls.
