Missed opportunity as Ireland have to settle for draw with French

Declan Kidney’s side were much-improved on their last outing but failed to score in the second half.

IRELAND LET A 13-3 lead slip to draw 13-13 with France at Lansdowne Road this evening.

Declan Kidney’s men looked comfortable for an hour – a Jamie Heaslip try and eight points from Paddy Jackson giving them a deserved lead – but a late try by Louis Picamoles converted by a largely misfiring Frederic Michalak drew France level.

It was the second successive draw between the two sides but extended France’s winless streak over the past two Six Nations to seven and leaves them needing to beat Scotland at home next Saturday to have any chance of avoiding the wooden spoon.

The draw will ease some of the pressure on Ireland coach Declan Kidney.

The Irish made the early running in terrible weather conditions and were rewarded after a superb tactical kick deep into the French 22 by Brian O’Driscoll set up a lineout.

Peter O’Mahony won the ball and from the resulting driving maul Heaslip squeezed over the line to score his eighth international try – Jackson belied concerns over his placekicking, after a disastrous performance against Scotland, by landing a superb conversion.

France were presented with a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 16th minute but Michalak, whose selection had raised eyebrows after three poor performances, missed his penalty from close range.

Ireland were very much in control but Jackson missed a chance to make it 10-0 in the 23rd minute as his penalty from long range drifted wide.

Michalak made no mistake with his second chance in the 27th minute as he slotted over a penalty to make it 7-3.

However, the Irish scrum were forcing the French into infringement after infringement and Jackson, assuming responsibility when the Irish could have kicked for the corner, opted for a kick at goal from long range in the 30th minute and coverted it to restore the seven point advantage.

The 21-year-old, playing in only his second test, was showing little fear and he punished the French again three minutes later as he stroked a penalty over from about 45 metres for 13-3 which even had injured first choice fly-half Jonathan Sexton grinning and applauding from the stands.

Michalak’s woeful first-half finished on a suitably low note as given the chance to give France a filip on the stroke of half-time he sent another kickable penalty wide to leave the Irish sitting comfortably enough at the break.

Jackson had an early chance in the second-half to extend the lead but his effort fell just short.

The Irish were still controlling the game but prop Mike Ross conceded a penalty in the 54th minute and Morgan Parra stepped up, replacing the misfiring Michalak, and converted it for 13-6.

Parra, though, proved he too was fallible, missing a tough penalty attempt just before the hour mark as the French started to pressure the hosts into a series of errors.

The visitors pressed forward despeate to redress the balance but saw a chance go begging as with extra men wide out to the right they failed to push home the advantage and the Irish defence held firm.

However, eventually the French breached the line as Picamoles took advantage of Ireland dithering after a penalty was awarded and tapping it quickly he touched it down for his fifth try for his country – Michalak stepped up to the task and converted for 13-13.

Taking Murray off, = Bizarre. Kydney facing more Q’. O’Driscoll should not have been LET back on to pitch, for his own welfare. Are management looking to create exit strategy. ??? Just a thought for debate.

  • Kidney needs to go after this six nations campaign is over. This is the worst six nations for Ireland. Only won 1 game.

  • How come, down through the years, we have always allowed the French back into the game? Regardless of who is playing, we always let them come back at us and it is usually in the 2nd half. You can talk about transition and injuries but I can remember this happening in the 80′s, 90′s, right through too today! Maybe it Suggests that our system is wrong somewhere, surely can’t be a player problem, all the players of the last 30 years? Yes we’ve won occasionally against the French in this time but more often we’ve been on top against them and let it slip! Just another frustrating dog day afternoon against Les Bleu!

They’ve been very unlucky with all the injury’s any team with that amount of quality players injured would suffer.the team is in transition can’t all be blamed on kidney.have to look towards the World Cup and blood young players

  • Man of the match taken off with 20 minutes to go and the reason given is that he was a bit tired.
How did he communicate this tiredness to the coaching staff.
Did he make secret hand signals.
Or did they see the signs that none of the rest of us could.
He didn’t look tired to me.
Maybe Donncha Ryan had that same tired look
He was having a great game as well.
Substitutions were needed in the Front row of the scrum but those lads were looking grand and not showing any signs of tiredness.
    The whole thing is bizarre.

  • Fair result.
    Both teams equally crap.
Sadly end for BOD as the ankle looks to be gone again. End of a magnificent era.
    Hope Reddan us ok.
All round a another bad day at the office.
Now time to rebuild for the future starting with match v Italy.

  • We are going into transition lets deal with that fact, but it’s testament to how far we have come that we should not have to wait too long! Get the game into the public schools and the rugby world will feel what we can do!

  • Just to remind people that we did not lose and given a different call might have won. France have not gone 8 games without winning since 1907. They have a pool of around 350,000 to our 15,000. The Irish team represents all four provinces not just Munster and Leinster which some might think judging by some of the comments. Some of the performances were quite heroic. Can we not just row in behind the players and keep the provincial rivalries for the Rabo and the Heineken.

  • Maybe so, but IMO this is a time for team development and there were many good signs today…

    • If we didnt have those unlucky injuries, Jackson would have 0 caps marshell would have 0 caps, Henderson would have 0 caps McCarthy would not have been called up..Madigan the form fly half in Ireland after sexton only got on the pitch today because two of our players were concussed and most likely he will be excluded from the Italy game where he should in fact be starting to show what he can do..I don’t want any player to get injured but without them BOD ROG Darcy POC and co would all be hitting a 1000 caps that’s all due to the lack of planning by the management

Jackson had a superb game at 10 – what makes you think Madigan would have been better?

  • So glad it was a draw, as I would not like to see either of them loose, especially not Ireland at this stage.
They are also the two best teams to watch in any rugby match.
It’s a bad stint for Ireland, but I’m sure it won’t last.

  • Obviously more Leinster readers on this site than Munster with all the red thumbs , with Ireland’s most accredited coach , along with injuries I think that he’s the man for the job . cut him a bit of slack and don’t be putting down your own ffs

  • Bod coming back on was ridiculous. He was being held up by 2 medical staff and clearly not right to continue. He always does this in a high profile game to steal some limelight. It is cringeworthy.

  • of course the leinster crowd want kidney gone, got rog gone want mcfadden want madigan on want fitzgerald on want earls gone and until yesterday wanted murray gone. now with their mentality of only leinster then irish rugby is in the can. murray was taken off because if kidney has any hope he must appease the leinster power. but trust me no other coach on the planet will get out of this team given the politics around that kidney has got… he will be axed and time will prove him too be our best option.
