#IreFIJ: How Ireland’s new-look team rated this evening

There are plenty of reasons to be cheerful after the 53-0 win over Fiji in Limerick.

Denis Hurley 6 - Looked solid in defence as he quelled some of Fiji’s more expansive breaks. Played a key role in McFadden’s first try.

Fergus McFadden 8 - A great showing from a man pounding on the first-team door. Great strength for two tries and played flanker while Chris Henry was in the sin bin.

Darren Cave 7 – Started excellently as he combined well with Marshall and sent McFadden clear in the first-half. Scored a nice, jinking try but performance faded in the second half.

Luke Marshall 8 – A superb outing from the 21-year-old who was chiefly responsible for keeping Ireland ticking in the first half. Set up Gilroy’s first and rounded the evening off with a try.

Craig Gilroy 9 – Named on the left wing but started on the right. Comfortable under the high ball and pace to burn. 80-metre breakaway try capped a hat-trick debut and a man-of-the-match performance.

Paddy Jackson 7 – Looked sharp in attack and brave in tackling some big Fijian units. Reverse passing out of the Sexton school. Made difficult conversions but missed a few simple ones.

Conor Murray 6 – Was sharp in setting up McFadden for his first try and tackled doggedly. Guilty of not being quick enough with distribution. Recovered well from a spear tackle before Paul Marshall appeared.

Dave Kilcoyne 6 – Penalised for some illegal binding at the scrum. Did not let himself down but not too many chances with ball in hand to show his worth.

Sean Cronin 9 – Pushed Gilroy very hard for the official ‘best player’ award. Bulled over for a try and set up Muldoon for a gimme he did not take. Solid lineout throws and committed second-half defence.

Mike Ross 7 – Was asked to put in another long shift and did so in typical, doughty fashion. Front row did not dominate but Ross carried well throughout.

Donncha O’Callaghan 7 – Was the livelier of the second rows and made some valuable carries in the first half as Ireland pressed. Will be happy with the 80-minute outing.

Dan Tuohy 6 – Jumped well in the lineout and battled manfully at the coalface. A tough game for forwards to gain much notice and will not threaten McCarthy for a starting spot against Argentina.

Iain Henderson – 8 Industrial and committed throughout. Showed good awareness to poach a wayward lineout and break upfield. Great steal on the Fijian scrum-half on the Irish tryline and set up Marshall for his late try.

John Muldoon 6 – Mucked in for his team and denied Fiji the quick ball they crave so much. Damaged his leg in a collision with Murray and was stretchered off early in the second-half.

Jamie Heaslip 7 – Will benefit from this outing ahead of a big test next week. Pack-hunted Fijians with Henderson and O’Callaghan in turn. Crucial role played in McFadden’s second try.

Replacements

Richardt Strauss 6 – His lineout throwing was much improved and he enjoyed himself in a 20 minute appearance. Defended well as Fiji pressed in the closing stages.

Cian Healy 5 – Was penalised for holding on as he tried to make a running impact. Got involved in some needless pushing and cribbing with Tatanavou in the last 10 minutes.

Michael Bent 5 – Made his presence felt when he came on and got the attention of referee Hodges. Another game in green under his belt.

Chris Henry 6 – Would have rated higher for 17 great, foraging minutes but his yellow card for illegal entry into the breakdown slowed the Irish freight train.

Paul Marshall 6 – Came on too late to truly influence proceedings but played a key role in Gilroy’s second try and kept his team moving.

Simon Zebo 6 – Another effective cameo from a replacement. His best contribution was haring onto a Jackson pass to set Gilroy free for his second try.

Mike McCarthy – Replaced Heaslip but not on long enough to rate.

  • Great win for Ireland and the young lads on the team! Finally nice to see us running in the tries

  • Agree with retro much everything- but Cronin a 9? Yes he was great in the loose, but his line out throwing was abysmal. Our line out in general is really creaking this series.

  • Why exactly was Mike Ross used in this game? If he had been injured that would have been a disaster.

  • All well and good beating a ‘didn’t turn up’ Fiji team but all will be revealed against Argentina.

  • A bit harsh on Henry considering that like Heaslip last week he was carded because the team had a card coming and he was the unlucky one who gave away a penalty when the referee’s patience expired.

Unfortunately for Henderson and Gilroy, we aren’t really lacking in number 6s or wingers.

Although Fiji helped him look good, Cave showed we have more options than just Earls when O’Driscoll retires. Although McFadden may also see that as his best chance of nailing down a position.

The most optimistic for Ireland was Luke Marshall’s performance. We’ve needed someone to push or Gordon D’Arcy’s place for a long time and it looks like we have someone who can have a stab at that.

  • Luke Marshall 9.
Some excellent performances but forgive me if it sounds cynical but so we really think this will influence Kidney? A lot of the changes in this series have been forced upon him and any coach that still thinks its a good idea to have O’Gara and Sexton on the same pitch has his head in the sand.
I really hope we beat Argentina for the good of the team but I think something radically needs to shift with Kidney.

  • In fairness we ll have some weapons to chose from in the backs in the next few years.. At 10 we have Jackson Hanrahen Keatly and Madigan.. 12 Marshall and Hanrahen.. 13 Earls Cave.. wing.and fullback well we are spoilt for choice with Zebo Gilroy O’Dea Earls O’Halloren ( know I spelt that wrong ) just to name a few..

  • Argintina playing southern hemisphere has brought new hieghts to thier format.. play the young guns again to see if it was a one off.. first 20 minutes in the second half was showing some holes! See if they can manage.. it would be good test! Healy coming of the bench was brutal and continues not to release the ball in time.. short arm syndrome or not he must step up when carrying the ball or go hard first then to the ground for support.. keeps getting isolated! Mauling by South Africa proved that Ireland is weak in mauling lineups and will continue to prove fatal if not improved in internationals caps! All in all it was good but not a great preformance against a struggling Fiji lineup! Mind ya a very entertaining and speedy dynamic game which I havn’t seen for a long time! Thumbs up for Ireland with much needed improvements could prove critical in the future!

    • I would agree with you about trying some of the youngsters against Argentina except that the match is so important to our seeding for the next world cup. We have to win.

As I mentioned in my other post, the exception is Luke Marshall who really seems to give us a badly needed alternative to D’Arcy, who hasn’t produced in years.

Chris Henry might also be worth a shot at open side flanker

The rest will have to wait until Scotland and Italy in the six nations.

  • Cronin was good in the loose but his throwing was off, 7. A 6 for Ross, he seemed to struggle again today which I havent seen for awhile and it was worrying, However he got a shove on in one of the two scrums after Kilkoyne went off so maybe that had something to do with it. As for Zebo, who Donal O’Connell had a go at, I thought played well and looked hungry for ball, which is omething I love to see.

  • Fiji, come on… Real tests are yet to come. Would be a confidence booster I suppose.

  • Strange they are willing to throw young ulster lads in, and yet JJ gets nominated for world junior player of the year and isn’t given a chance, even with Munster. Something tells me if paddy Jackson was allowed to play in junior World Cup he def wouldn’t have done as well.

  • Zebo, is it only me or can everyone not see it, does not perform, needs to pull his socks up in more ways than one.

  • Donal O’Connell a lttle hard on the Zebo! I agree he needs to step up and show more confidence in his running capabilities but he also needs support with someone who can keep up! The young guns can support Zebo and I think its only a mater of time for him to mature into the lineup! Irelands backs are missing the explosive support and as mentioned before ” running mauls” and the prevention tactics from getting isolated needs huge improvements! They need to hold onto the ball more and grind it out and use these test matches to improve the on the basics! Basics equals field position, field position equals points, points equal wins! All in all ..A promising pro’formance!

Can someone please tell me what we learned from playing Donnacha O’Callinan yesterday ? Should this type of match be used for trying emerging talent?
