Euro disaster sees Ireland fall to 26th in the world

Surprise surprise, Spain remain the world’s top-ranked side following their win at Euro 2012.

A DISASTROUS EURO 2012 campaign has seen Ireland plummet eight places to 26th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s side were beaten off the park without a single point in Poland, scoring one and conceding nine as they were the first team to be eliminated from this summer’s showpiece.

Ireland’s slide from 18th was the worst of any of the 16 teams at Euro 2012. Holland, who were also beaten in all three of their group games, dropped four places from fourth to eighth.

Spain remain the world’s top-ranked side following their third successive win at a major tournament while beaten finalists Italy, another of Ireland’s Group C opponents, jump up six places from 12th to sixth.

Croatia, who dashed Irish hopes with a 3-1 win in Poznan, drop one place from ninth to 10th.

Germany are second, Uruguay third, England move up to two places to fourth while Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired run to the semi-finals sees them move up five places to fifth.

Of Ireland’s other opponents on the road to Rio, Sweden remain in 17th, Austria are down two places to 60th, Kazakhstan are down six places to 147th while the Faroe Islands suffered the biggest drop of any country in the rankings, falling 33 places to 155th.

The are based on results over the last 4 year on a weighted scale.
Points also deteriorate with results 4 years ago being worth 0.25 of current points.

The ELO ranking has us at 31st, which is probably more realistic.

This ranking system is a shambles. In a World Cup group stage, if all criteria in the event of a tie have been exhausted, the rankings come into play. So, if say Brazil and England finish exactly level, England qualify because they would be 4th, and Brazil 11th.

Rock, paper, scissors would be fairer.

Disastrous campaign? Both finalists were in our group and a far superior Croatia who were better than a lot of teams that progressed further. We were lucky to even make the tournament. Unrealistic expectations.

Was great crack over there though.

Both finalists came from Irelands group. They beat everyone else as well as us. Therefore our group was the strongest. Therefore Euro 2012 result was Spain 1st Italy 2nd Croatia 3rd and Ireland 4th. Makes as much sense as that ranking process. :-)

It seems a bit unfair that teams that didn’t qualify maintain a better position than Ireland. Norway and Switzerland are ahead of us now but haven’t kicked a ball in anger since the qualifiers.
